Fred Slaughter was a two-sport Ranger athlete playing football from 1990-1993 as a cornerback and competing in track and field from 1991-1992 in the 400 Meter. Thirty-one years later, Slaughter’s name remains at the top of the record books in both sports. Slaughter was a four-year letterman starting in the defensive backfield as a freshman in 1990 and remaining in the Rangers starting defensive lineup for the next four years.
While at Northwestern, Slaughter earned all-conference team honors in football. In 1991, he made 2nd team defense in the Oklahoma Intercollegiate Conference (OIC). In 1992, he earned 1st team defense in the OIC. Slaughter also earned honorable mention on the 1992 NAIA All-American team. In his Northwestern football career, Slaughter ranks seventh with 26 passes defended, 10 pass breakups and 16 interceptions (which is second for most career interceptions at Northwestern). In track and field, Slaughter earned the 400M champion title in both 1991 and 1992. His 1991 performance helped his team win the 1991 OIC conference team championship. Slaughter served as a student assistant and graduate assistant football coach. He graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Health and Physical Education in 1997, then earned his master’s degree in Secondary Education in 2001. Slaughter was a member of the 1999 National Championship coaching staff. From 2005-2007, Slaughter served as Northwestern’s head football coach. Slaughter currently serves as the Dean of Students/Assistant Athletic Director for El Reno (Okla.) Public Schools. He and his wife, Melissa Prigmore, have two children: Amy Slaughter-Smith and Crozier Prigmore.
