Greg Johnson, a 1983 graduate, was a member of both the Ranger football and track and field programs. Known for his exceptional athleticism and speed, Johnson spent four years with the Rangers and earned recognition and accolades in both sports.
A four-year student-athlete from 1979 to 1983, Johnson graduated with a bachelor’s degree in health and physical education. He competed as a defensive back and wide receiver for the football program while also serving as a sprinter on the track and field team. His most decorated season came in 1982, when he earned All-Conference and All-District honors in football and was a member of the conference champion track team.
Throughout his career at Northwestern, Johnson was a four-year starter in football and competed in track all four years. His consistent excellence earned him all-conference honors in both football and track, solidifying his reputation as one of the university’s most versatile athletes of his era.
Johnson concluded his collegiate career as a highly decorated athlete, posting elite speed times that remain notable today. He recorded a 10.4-second time in the 100 meters, a 4.4-second 40-yard dash, and a 20.8-second time in the 200 meters, a mark that still stands as a Northwestern school record.
Following his graduation in 1983, Johnson embarked on a collegiate coaching career. He spent many years at Langston University, where he led the Lions to their first conference championship in 20 years and earned four Coach of the Year honors. Johnson currently serves as the head football coach at Watonga (Okla.) High School.
