A native of Pennsylvania, Dr. Norman “Doc” Matthews was a star gymnast at Syracuse University and helped lead the Orangemen to the 1950 National Championship his senior year. He graduated from college later that year and began coaching at Texas A&M University.

In 1958, Matthews began a long association with Northwestern when he became gymnastics coach and a member of the health and physical education faculty. At the time, Northwestern had the only varsity gymnastics team in Oklahoma.

Matthews later concentrated on his teaching position, but in 1966 he became the popular public address voice of Ranger basketball and football games. With the exception of a two-year leave of absence, Matthews spent 24 seasons behind the microphone.

Matthews retired from full-time teaching in 1987 and ended his public address duties in 1992.
