Northwestern Oklahoma State Athletics

Sanford “Sandy” Newsom was one of the most versatile athletes in Northwestern history, earning 14 varsity letters in four seasons from 1934-38. A native of Yukon, Newsom earned 12 letters in football, basketball and track and two more in baseball. As a basketball player, Newsom was selected to the All-Oklahoma Collegiate Conference team three times, including first-team selections his sophomore and senior seasons. As a track star he won the OCC high jump championship four straight times. His junior year he set a new conference record with a leap of 6’ 3 ¾”. Newsom also won the pole vault championship, two times and earned several medals in the broad jump and javelin. Newsom also was named all-conference in football his senior year. Following his college career, Newsom played AAU basketball with the Kansas City Martin Oilers and later the Wichita Cessna Bobcats. He also played semi-pro baseball. Newsom currently lives in Enid.
