ALVA, Okla. - The 2017 Hall of Fame inductee class is comprised of a baseball legend, a star men's basketball player, an outstanding football coach and a standout softball player.
Steve Nunez, Gaylon Nickerson, Lee Brower and Falynn Burns will be inducted in ceremonies on Saturday, Jan. 28. The 25th Hall of Fame class will be honored at a luncheon in the Student Center Ballroom at 11:30 a.m., and formally inducted during halftime of the men's basketball game against Harding University later that afternoon in Percefull Fieldhouse at 3 p.m.
Steve Nunez was a breakout player who led his team in many categories throughout his first season, including breaking the all-time home runs record for a single season as a freshman with 23. He set the HR's record for NAIA as well as Northwestern at the time in 1982 for a career where he belted 71 total home runs throughout his Ranger career. Throughout his illustrious career at Northwestern, he holds one of the best career batting averages of any other Ranger before or after his time as he batted just under .375 for the four years he attended Northwestern.
A Wichita, Kan. native, Gaylon Nickerson had a fantastic season in 1992-93 and it was certainly one of the best of any Ranger before or after his time here at Northwestern. Following his year at Kansas State, he led the Rangers to a 29-2 record, while collecting All-OIC Player of the Year honors as well as First Team All-American status as well, following a record breaking season where he scored a total of 672 points, the most in a single season at Northwestern. He also broke a game record as well with 41 against Oklahoma City University.
One of the best coaches in Northwestern history, Lee Brower was a member of the Ranger coaching staff from 1983-1994 where he was at the helm for nine seasons. He recorded many firsts for Northwestern football as his team won the program's first Conference title, earned a spot in the NAIA playoffs in 1987 and most wins in program history in 1990. One of the highlights of his legendary coaching career at Northwestern was in 1989 where his team won its second conference championship and made its second playoff appearance, leading to his honor of being named District 9's Coach of the Year.
Perhaps one of the best Softball players to every wear the uniform is Falynn Burns who was a four-time First Team All-Conference selection and is the last Northwestern athlete to achieve this honor. The 2004 graduate had perhaps her best season during her final ride as she batted .358, scored 32 runs, recorded 63 hits, 15 doubles, seven home runs and two stolen bases. Her fantastic year also earned her First Team All-Region honors.
