Rangers Complete Day One of OPSU Tournament

ALVA, Okla. – Northwestern Oklahoma State volleyball opened their regular season with a 3-0 loss to the University of Texas-Permian Basin at the 2016 Aggies Challenge Tournament.

Game 1

Individual Leaders
  • Hannah Williams led the way for the black-and-red with nine kills. Jennifer Eubanks and Asia Pipkin chipped in four kills apiece as well.
  • Kiauna Clark contributed in multiple ways for the black-and-red as she totaled 11 assists as well as nine digs throughout the contest. 
Game Changer
  • The opening set saw Hannah Williams score the first point of the game and the 2016 season for the Rangers, but UTPB found their rhythm early, and the black-and-red were unable to respond, dropping the first set 25-16.
  • The following set saw the Rangers gain their composure and jump out to an early 4-1 lead before a seven point run for the Falcons propelled them to a 25-20 victory.
  • The final set proved to be the closest of the match as the Rangers had the score as close as 21-20 late in the set before two late attack errors proved to be enough for the Falcons to complete the sweep of the Rangers.

Records: SHSU (2-0) - Northwestern (0-2)
Location: Oscar Williams Fieldhouse - Goodwell, Okla.

ALVA, Okla. – Northwestern Oklahoma State volleyball finished day one of the 2016 Aggies Challenge with a 3-2 loss to Fort Hayes State University.

Individual Leaders
  •  Senior Natalie Fahey led the way for the Rangers with 13 kills while producing an impressive .440 kill percentage.
  • Senior Hayley Brattain also had a productive afternoon totaling 10 kills.
Game Changer
  • After a disappointing first match of the year the Rangers came out and immediately put the pressure on the Tigers. The black-and-red had a 23-19 lead late in the set before a few Tiger points narrowed up the match. Two key points from Nora To'omalatai and Jennifer Eubanks eventually sealed a 25-23 Rangers victory.
  • In the second set of action the Rangers got on a five point run, which cushioned the lead to 12-7. A late Tiger rally proved to be not enough to catch the Rangers as they won the second set 25-18.  
  • After two outstanding sets of volleyball, the final three sets saw the Tigers capitalize on multiple attack errors by the Rangers. The Rangers also found it difficult to attack the solid Tigers defense as the Tigers totaled 89 digs throughout the match.
News & Notes
  • Vanessa Maile and Kiauna Clark once again provided the black-and-red with the majority of the assists with 22-21 respectively.
 
Up Next
  • Northwestern Oklahoma State Volleyball will be back in action Saturday, Sept. 2 as they continue play in the Aggie Challenge Tournament with another double-header scheduled for 1 p.m. and 5 p.m.
