ALVA, Okla. – The Northwestern Oklahoma State volleyball put an end to a three game conference losing streak and dominated Ouachita Baptist on the way to a 3-0 (25-21, 25-23, 25-20) sweep.
The Rangers (17-8, 7-4 GAC) bested the Tigers (13-9, 6-5 GAC) in nearly every statistical category and answered every challenge in route to their 10
th sweep of the season. Strong starts in each of the three sets for the Black-and-Red allowed them room to breathe when Ouachita Baptist mounted their comebacks.
Offensive forces
Jennifer Eubanks and
Hannah Williams put in their normal nights work with 11 kills each, and posted hitting percentages of .381 and .333 respectively.
Eubanks and Williams got started early and helped the Rangers build an 18-14 lead to open up the first set of action. Five straight Tiger points, however, vaulted the Tigers back ahead 19-18 before two kills from setter
Kiauna Clark and a service ace from freshman
Sydnee Miller began a rally of Ranger points that pushed them ahead, 25-21.
Clark continues to perform at a high level following an injury that sidelined her for a few games midway through the season, notching nine kills, 20 assists, and nine digs to fill up the stat sheet once again. Miller has continued to work her way into the lineup on a more consistent basis and led the squad with three service aces on the afternoon.
The second set saw Northwestern struggle to put away the opposing team, leading 22-16 at one point, but allowed a 5-1 run in favor of the Tigers to make things interesting down the stretch. Two bad sets from Clark gave Ouachita hope as they trailed just 24-23 following the comeback run, but a costly attack error by the Tigers allowed the Rangers to hang on for a 25-23 second set victory.
A 7-1 run to open up the third and final set combined with multiple winning rallies for the Rangers that saw the back line of the Rangers defense stand strong on multiple occasions led the Black-and-Red to a 25-20 victory. That back line of defense in
Carley Geer,
Tobi Barker, and
Brooklynn Hesson combined for 25 of the squad's 46 digs on the afternoon.
The sweep over Ouachita will provide the Rangers with some much needed confidence heading into the final stages of their regular season. Northwestern currently needs just one win to clinch their spot in the post-season tournament and will face the five in-state rivals to wrap up the regular season.
Southern Nazarene will serve as the first opponent for head coach
Jeremy White and company on Oct. 26 as they look to close out their program-best season in style.
