Rangers Taken Down by Newman

WICHITA, Kansas – The Northwestern Oklahoma State men's basketball team was unable to complete the comeback after tying up the contest late in the second half, eventually losing by a final score of 80-70 to Newman University.

The Rangers (6-2, 3-1 GAC) were outrebounded throughout the afternoon by a final total of 38-to-21 and were unable to slow down an efficient Newman (5-5, 2-0 Heartland) offensive attack with the Jets connecting on 25-of-47 (53.2%) shots from the field. The Rangers tied the ballgame up at 60-60 with 4:12 remaining in the game, but an 11-1 run during the ensuing three minutes in favor of the Jets built the lead too large for the Rangers to overcome in the final 1:13 of the game.

Senior Cody Halvorson logged 17 points to lead the Black-and-Red. Halvorson connected on 4-of-9 shots from behind the three point line while fellow guard A.J. Jones filled up the stat sheet with 15 points, six assists, six rebounds, and two steals. Junior Akeem Oglesby chipped in on a solid night for the Ranger's backcourt with 10 points of his own.

Trailing 39-30 at the halftime break, the Rangers got going early in the second half and brought the Jet lead down to just four at 50-46 with 14:31 remaining on the clock thanks to a three pointer from Halvorson. Senior Greg Minor Jr. finally put Northwestern ahead just minutes later with two free throws that gave Northwestern their first lead since the 13:25 minute mark of the first half.

Both teams battled back and forth all the way down until the key 11-1 run that Newman put together to extend their lead to a comfortable margin.

Junior Treyvon Andres added nine points to the scoring effort while Minor finished the evening with eight points.

The Rangers will look to regroup after their second consecutive loss of the season with their third straight non-conference road contest against Randall University on Dec. 16 at 1 p.m.
