ALVA, Okla. – Northwestern Oklahoma State and Henderson State took the field for the series doubleheader on Saturday afternoon where the Reddies took both contests, 14-7 and 5-0.
Two Ranger batters collected three hits on the day in
Steven Deckard (3-for-5) and
Jacob Long (3-for-8).
Cooper Stanley and
Jorin Van Amstel also had multi-hit games, going 2-for-4 and 2-for-5 respectively.
Game 1
Starting game one for the Rangers was
Bryce Tomlin, but he struggled getting outs and was knocked out of the game in the third inning of work.
Northwestern started off the game with a lead in the first inning following an RBI groundout to second base by Stanley, scoring Carrington on the play. The Rangers then made it 2-0 when Castro laced a single up the middle, plating Long.
Tomlin remained clean through two innings of work, but the third would ultimately be the demise for the starter, surrendering four runs, which ultimately removed him from the game.
After falling behind in the top of the third, the hosts came back with a two-run inning of their own to tie it back up at four apiece.
The tie wouldn't last long however as the HSU bats got hot again in the fourth and fifth innings where they posted six more runs to make it a commanding 10-4 advantage.
The Black-and-Red got back on the board in the bottom half of five when Stanley belted a solo homerun to right field that was a no-doubter off the bat making it a 10-5 contest.
Nick Llorente came on in relief of
Brandon Nesseralla in the fifth inning, going 1.1 innings before being replaced by
Tyler Havener in the sixth.
The Ranger pitching staff gave up another big inning in the sixth , surrendering three runs to make it an eight-run deficit at 13-5.
The Rangers maintained their fight however, following a two-run inning where Van Amstel and Delano were each brought around to score in the inning. The two-run inning for the hosts made it a six-run game.
Relieving Havener in the top of the seventh inning was
Collin Fouts who came in and shut the Reddies down in order, leaving the 13-7 HSU advantage in place.
Both teams came up empty in the scoring column in the seventh, but the visitors changed that in the eighth, where a SAC fly to centerfield scored their 14
th run of the game.
Fouts would go on to shut down the Reddies again in the top of the ninth inning, but Northwestern wasn't able to get on the board, ending the game in a seven-run defeat.
Game 2
Getting the start in game two of the day was
David Sanchez who went three full innings on the day, surrendering five total runs, two of which were earned.
Henderson State got off to a hot start in the second game of the series, following a four-run first frame and a one-run second, while holding the hosts to no runs.
Coming on in relief for the Rangers was
Matthew Bickford in the fourth inning and he contributed to a second consecutive scoreless inning for the Reddies, maintaining the 5-0 deficit.
Bickford was solid for the Ranger pitching staff for his four innings of work, giving up no runs and just two hits in his outing. Unfortunately, however the home club was unable to put any runs on the board in the ballgame, leaving the final score at 5-0.
Northwestern was shut down on offense in game two of the series, only adding three hits to the line, while striking out 12 times on the afternoon.
