ALVA, Okla. – Northwestern Oklahoma State University women's soccer fell 3-2 to Ouachita Baptist on Thursday after a heartbreaking double-overtime loss. The Rangers held a 2-1 lead late in the game but the Tigers tied it up with seven minutes left in regulation. Meagan North then scored just one minute into the second OT to hand the Rangers their seventh loss of the season.
After two tough losses to in-state rivals Southwestern Oklahoma State (2-5 L) and East Central (0-1 L), the Rangers returned home to the Alva Rec Complex to kickoff Northwestern's homecoming weekend festivities.
Northwestern outshot Ouachita 27-17, but the strong shooting performance wasn't enough to knock off the Tigers.
A motivated Rangers squad came out firing on all cylinders in the first half, getting off 12 shots including five on goal.
Bailey Jarvis and
Yazmin Gomez combined for 13 shots in the game, and their efforts paid off as both picked up goals for the black-and-red.
Jarvis opened the scoring in the first half as the 5'3" sophomore booted home her first goal of the 2017 season to give the Rangers a 1-0 lead. Northwestern had a few other chances in the frame, but took the one goal lead into the break.
After the Tigers tied it up just three minutes into the second frame, Northwestern came charging back to regain control. In the 60
th minute,
Makayla Barrientos's beautiful touch pass over the Tiger defender found Gomez who fired it home for her second of the year.
The Rangers suffered a slight defensive breakdown with just seven minutes to go, allowing Bryson Thomas to tie the game late.
Gomez nearly came out the hero when her shot midway through the first overtime ricocheted off the right post. Junior
Jazlynn Martinez also had a shot at breaking the tie but her attempt was thwarted by Tigers keeper Erin Webster.
After nothing was solved in the first OT, Ouachita wasted no time going to work in the final period as North's goal in the first minute of 2OT put the Rangers away.
