Rangers Battle Back for Tie in Home Opener

ALVA, Okla. – The Northwestern Oklahoma State University women's soccer team (0-2-1) survived an intense effort from both squads to pull off a come-from-behind tie, 1-1 following the completion of the second period of overtime against Washburn University (2-0-1).

Junior Karla Lopez tied the game up at the 85:20 mark with a strike from outside of the goalie box over the arms of the Washburn keeper to tie the game up. Lopez paired that late-game score with three other shots on goal to finish with a team-high four shots on goal.

Northwestern survived a second-half surge from Washburn that saw them out-shoot the Rangers 15-to-3 in the second half while constantly controlling the ball on the Northwestern side of the field the majority of the period. The defense from the Black-and-Red held strong throughout the second half, allowing a chip shot from near half-field that keeper Kylee Loustaunau let slip by at the 74:25 mark be the only hiccup.

That goal served as an immediate wake-up call for the Rangers as they immediately went on the offensive and pressed forward to open up the tying goal for Lopez. The back line of defense in senior Erica Hostetter, redshirt sophomore Tiana Young-Mauchly, and junior Clarissa Hinojo held strong throughout the evening against a physical Washburn attack.

The physicality turned into frustration as forward Paige Swanson was carded in the 95th minute for a blatant shove away from the ball against Young-Mauchly. Tempers continued to rise as both teams continued to battle all the way until the completion of the two overtime periods, with neither defense backing down all the way until the final whistle.

Washburn out-shot the Rangers in the end, finishing up with a final game total of 18-to-13. 31 fouls were recorded by both teams as both units sported a physical game-plan throughout the contest.

Sophomores Yazmin Gomez and Hollie Pankake along with junior Calvonis Prentice all recorded two shots total, with both of Prentices' efforts being on goal as well as one of Gomez's. Loustaunau recorded 11 saves during her 110 minutes in net.
