ALVA, Okla. – The Northwestern Oklahoma State women's basketball team was defeated by Southeastern Oklahoma State University by a final score of 83-76 despite a career-high 26 points from junior
Jade Jones.
The Pond Creek, Okla. native hit 9-of-18 shots from the field and 7-of-9 free throw attempts throughout the evening, along with seven assists and eight rebounds. Southeastern jumped ahead of the Lady Rangers in the third quarter and never looked back, extending their lead to as many as 11 throughout the final quarter of play.
Two Jones' free throws with just over a minute left in the third brought the Lady Rangers back to within one at 51-50, but seven ensuing Savage Storm points extended their lead back to eight just a few minutes back into the fourth. Freshman
Kinsey Neiderer attempted to draw the game back into a one possession ballgame with a lay-up with 47 seconds remaining on the clock to bring the score to 75-71, but eight consecutive free throw makes down the stretch for Southeastern extended the lead too far for the Lady Rangers to catch.
Neiderer and fellow freshman
Selena McDonald were the other two Northwestern players to reach double figures, with Neiderer totaling 11 and McDonald scoring 10. McDonald continued to assert her presence in the paint as she has done the past few games, grabbing six boards throughout the contest.
Northwestern made 28-of-62 shots for a shooting percentage of 45 while Southeastern made 24-of-50 for a slightly better percentage of 48 percent. The key difference in the contest came down to the Storm's ability to hit their free throws down the stretch, making 23-of-27 for the game and creating enough cushion to make it impossible for the Lady Rangers to get themselves back into the game late in the fourth quarter.
Northwestern will finish up their two game home stretch on Saturday afternoon with a game against East Central at 1:00 p.m.
