ARKADELPHIA, Ark. – The Northwestern Oklahoma State women's basketball team was unable to pull off the victory on Saturday afternoon despite strong second and third quarter performances that saw them outscore Henderson State by a combined total of 43-to-38.
The Lady Rangers ultimately dropped the contest after scoring just eight and 10 points in the first and fourth quarters. Freshman
Selena McDonald had a team-high 21 points in the game on 9-of-10 shots from the field.
A poor first quarter of action that saw Northwestern hit just 2-of-11 shots from the field was followed up with a second quarter in which they capitalized on 7-of-12 field goal attempts. An 8-3 run throughout the midway portion of the second quarter brought the Lady Ranger back to within 11 at the half at 38-27.
McDonald and company continued to keep the pressure on the Reddie defense and narrowed the lead down to just five at the 1:20 mark of the third quarter. A last second lay-up by the Reddies at the end of the third to bring the score to 58-51 would provide the momentum they needed to accumulate 20 points in the final quarter and hand Northwestern their second loss of the weekend.
Junior
Jade Jones joined McDonald in double-digit scoring with 18 points while guard
Jakeria Otey totaled 13. McDonald and fellow freshman
McKenzie Dean led the way with four rebounds apiece for the Black-and-Red.
Northwestern will return to the friendly confines of Percefull Fieldhouse for home games against Arkansas Tech and Harding scheduled for Feb.1 at 5:30 p.m. and Feb. 3 at 1:00 p.m.
