ALVA, Okla. – An overtime three-point shot from Jack Peck extended the lead just enough for the Northwestern Oklahoma State University men's basketball team as the Rangers take down Emporia State in the extra period, 94-90.
In the second half, neither team had a lead more than seven points, held by the Rangers with 10 minutes to go in the game. Whenever the Hornets will cut into the lead, the Rangers would answer.
After the Hornets grabbed the lead for a short time on a three-pointer by Sawyer Glick, David Thornton and Keion Bateast got the glass on back-to-back possessions to make it a three point game, 78-75.
Northwestern held off the visiting team until the final moments of the second when Malik Hluchoweckj hit a jumper in the paint and was fouled with 15-seconds to go. The senior converted his free-throw to tie the game at 82 and send the contest into extra time.
The Rangers never trailed in the overtime period as they started the last five minutes off with a 8-0 run, highlighted by Peck's three-pointer in the right corner to make it 90-82. With 1:14 to go, Glick drained another shot from long range, but Treyvon Andres made a great move in the paint for an easy layup to seal the victory for Northwestern.
It was the second overtime in as many games for the Rangers. The win moved Northwestern to 3-7 on the season, while the Hornets dropped to 6-5.
Northwestern will be back in action Thursday night at home when Southern Arkansas visits Alva for a Great American Conference game. The men will tip off following the women's game, which is scheduled to begin at 5:30 p.m.
Treyvon Andres recorded his second straight double-double with 17 points and 12 rebounds. Four other Rangers finished in double-figures as Thornton had 17, Cole Jones had a career high 16 points, Andrew Clopton had his first double-figure game with 11 points and Peck finished with 10.
It was truly a team victory for the men with the Ranger bench picking up 32 points. It was the first time Jan. 20 the Rangers tallied 90 points in a game.
