Rangers Upset Reigning Conference Champions

SHAWNEE, Okla.– Northwestern Oklahoma State University Rangers soccer forced a huge upset against reigning Great American Conference champions Oklahoma Baptist on the road Saturday afternoon.

Oklahoma Baptist came out seeming to own the ball during the first half of the match. The entire game was a battle of possessions with neither team being able to break through. The Bison held possession for 60% of the match but could not score.

"The way that we executed the game plan and the hard work ethic just says so much about their character. No words can describe how proud I am of them as well as how deserving they are of this result." Head Coach Erik Solberg.

The first half was fairly evenly matched with OBU taking eight shots and Northwestern taking 5. Reyna Gonzalez had a phenomenal game with seven saves throughout, three in the first half and four in the second.

The second half was dominated by OBU as they took 10 shots to Northwestern's one. The Bison also had four corner kicks, but the Rangers refused to back down with their defense coming in clutch throughout the match. Pricilla Villalobos led the Black-and-Red with two shots.

The Rangers stepped up and defended the 19 shots that the Bison took to keep the game scoreless 0-0 and sent the game into the first overtime period.

Eight minutes into the ten-minute overtime period Makayla Barrientos gets a good chance to take a shot but OBU goalie makes an amazing save to give the Rangers a corner kick. As the ball is sent towards the Bison's goal Alyssa Nunez sees an opportunity and takes it. After rebounding off of one of the OBU players Whitney Blanchard is in the perfect spot to squeak her attempt past the defense and score the winning goal on the bottom left corner.

"I am so proud of this team, the way we showed resilience and fought on the road this weekend to get a big six points is not only huge, but it's also well deserved. The girls worked for every inch that they got, and they deserve the results and all the credit, "stated Coach Solberg after the win. "They went on the road and defeated a team that is regionally ranked, defending conference champions, sat number one in the conference, all while playing in a tough environment in Shawnee. All of those things make me even more proud. I am super excited to take on the second half of conference play that starts this weekend."

The Rangers improve to 5-6-1 overall and 2-3-1 in conference play while Oklahoma Baptist drops to 7-5-1 and 5-2 in conference play.

Northwestern will take on long-time rival Southwestern Oklahoma State (2-7-1, 0-4 GAC) for the beginning of Homecoming. The game will be played at home Tuesday October 22nd at 6 p.m.
