Rangers Outlast Arkansas Tech in Five

RUSSELLVILLE, Ark.– Northwestern Oklahoma State University Rangers volleyball earned a huge bounce-back win against Great American Conference opponent Arkansas Tech early Saturday afternoon. After a tough loss the evening before the Black-and-Red were determined to take the match from the Golden Suns.

For the second time in as many games the Rangers went five sets, but this time snagged the win. [25-18, 10-25, 27-25, 17-25, 15-11]. Northwestern improved to a record of 16-8 overall, 6-3 in conference while Arkansas Tech dropped to a record of 13-8, and also 6-3 in the conference.

Senior Kiauna Clark had herself a game with 18 kills and a .350 hit percentage and four blocks. Kaydee Honeycutt had ten kills and led the team in digs with 19, while Jennifer Eubanks and Kate Deterding had seven kills each. Freshman Alexi Beach earned an astounding ten total blocks which led the team. Kaitlyn Robinson led in assists with 31.

The first set started out with both teams traded points. Once the score reached 10-10 the Rangers began to pull away with a four-point run here and a four-point run there. The Black-and-Red used multiple Arkansas Tech errors to secure the win with a score of 25-18.

The Golden Suns came screaming back with a vengeance and completely dominated the second set. A seven-point run from Arkansas Tech slammed the door on Northwestern with a tough score of 10-25.

The third set was the complete opposite of the first two with 17 different ties and 17 different lead changes throughout the entire set. Neither team could score more than four points at a time, and the latter half was no more than two points at a time. A final slam from Honeycutt allowed the Rangers to pull out the win with a score of 27-25.

An early seven point run from the Golden Suns created a tough hole for the Rangers to climb out of. Seniors Clark and Eubanks led a five-point rally to keep the Golden Suns within reach, but it wasn't enough. Three straight kills led to Arkansas Tech taking the fourth set 25-27.

With the match tied 2-2 the Rangers were headed to their second five set match of the weekend. The black-and-Red jumped to an early lead. Back-to-back kills from Clark kept the momentum on the side of the Northwestern. A final smack from Deterding gave them the set 15-11, therefore the match 3-2.

"Long road trips can be tough and to go five sets twice in under 20 hours is really tough. I am very proud of the way we hung in there today and picked up the win" declared Head Coach Fred Aubuchon.

Northwestern will take on Colorado State University-Pueblo away with the game set to start Tuesday October 22nd at 7 p.m.
