Slow Start Hurts Northwestern against Southern Nazarene

Box Score BETHANY, Okla.- The Lady Rangers opened up conference play Thursday night in Bethany, Okla., as they took on Southern Nazarene. The Crimson Storm jumped out fast to take control of the game as they won this game in 67-53.

After trading baskets to start the game early on the Crimson Storm went a 10-0 run to open up a 12-2 lead and never let go from there. Their largest lead in the quarter built up to 23-7. NWOSU would trail 23-9 at the end of the 1st. The Crimson Storm defense was just to much for the Lady Rangers as they were held to 22% shooting in the opening quarter. SNU was able to shoot extremely well with a solid 9-13 from the field good for 69% to open up that first quarter lead.

The defensive intensity picked up rapidly in the second quarter as the Lady Rangers forced the Crimson Storm to 18% shooting on 2-11 from the field.  However the Northwestern offense was not able to take advantage from that as they also struggled to solve Southern Nazarene's defense shooting 4-15 good for only 26%. NWOSU won the quarter 12-7 and cut the deficit to nine at halftime down 30-21. 

The third quarter SNU wanted to make sure they kept NWOSU comeback hopes away by going 4-4 from deep along with 9-13 shooting in the third quarter which had them outscoring the Lady Rangers 25-18. The 4-12 shooting for the Lady Rangers was not able to keep up with the Crimson Storm as their lead was extend to 55-39 after their 25 point quarter.

The fourth quarter the Lady Rangers tried to make their comeback shooting 46% from the field which was their best for the game in this one. NWOSU was able to win the quarter 14-12. However it was not able to cut into the deficit enough. As SNU was just able to match everything Northwestern tried throwing at them here tonight in Bethany Okla.

The senior forward Kalea King led Northwestern in scoring with 20 points in the game. This was King's second time this season hitting the 20 point mark. Bailey Brown followed her with 11 points, 9 rebounds along with 2 steals. 

The Lady Rangers struggled offensively tonight finishing the game 16-49 from the field for 32% overall, and 2-10 from 3-point range. The other area that troubled Northwestern tonight was staying away from turnovers, as the team would finish the night with 20 turnovers. The defense, however, was able to create 19 turnovers on their end of the floor trying to help mount a comeback.
 
Southern Nazarene had four players with double figures in points tonight, led by Kennedy Gillette who finished with 14 points.

Northwestern's record drops to 2-3 on the season, 0-1 in conference play while Southern Nazarene improves to 3-0 with a 1-0 in conference record. The Lady Rangers will look to bounce back on Saturday afternoon in Shawnee, Okla. as they get set to take on the Bison of Oklahoma Baptist at 1:00pm.
