Rangers Lose Momentum in First Conference Game to SNU

BETHANY, Okla.- Northwestern Oklahoma State University men's basketball faced some frustrations in their first Great American Conference match-up against top-ranked Southern Nazarene University Thursday evening. The Rangers trailed the Crimson Storm for most of the game and finished with a final score of 56-81. Transfer Nathan Bailey III had a stellar game with 19 points, four rebounds, and went 5-of-10 from beyond the arc.

The Crimson Storm grabbed an early lead, but the Rangers were hot on their trial right away. Three straight three-point shots drained from Bailey was enough to get the Black-and-Red back into the game and with another jumper from the 6'6" junior gave Northwestern their first lead 19-18 with 9:50 left in the first half. Southern Nazarene's offense struggled for almost six straight minutes with no points, but as soon as the Rangers snatched the lead a spark lit. A 19-2 run followed from the Crimson Storm through the final minutes of the half to give SNU a halftime lead of 16 points with a score of 21-37.

Following the pattern of games before the Rangers played much better in the second half after some adjustments. Bailey unfortunately had his fifth foul and had to leave the game around the eight-minute mark of the half which took away some huge points for the Black-and-Red as he had already hit two threes in the second half. Both teams shot better in the second half with the Northwestern hitting 43% from the field and were only outscored by nine through the second half, but the whole from the first half seemed too steep to overcome and the Rangers dropped the game 56-81.

The Crimson storm road two of their players throughout the game who each had over 24 points in the game. However, Northwestern kept up well in the second half scoring 35 points to SNU's 44. The Rangers struggled with possessions as they had 22 turnovers throughout the game resulting in 24 turnover points. The Black-and-Red help with almost fifteen points to their ten from the bench but 15 fast break points from the Crimson Storm really secured the win for Southern Nazarene.

Notable players include the above-mentioned Bailey as well as senior Jaedon Whitfield who had the second highest points with 12. Whitfield went 4-of-7 from the field and 4-for-5 form the line. Sophomores Cole Jones and Andrew Clopton each earned six points of their own to help the Rangers. A.J. Jones and Parrish Hewitt led the team with six rebounds each, and Jones led the team with six assists.

Northwestern will play their second Great American Conference game against Oklahoma Baptist on Saturday Nov. 23rd. Tip-off is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. as the Rangers follow the Lady Rangers game at 1:00 p.m.
