Rangers Lose Momentum in Southeastern Loss

ALVA, Okla.– Northwestern Oklahoma State University Rangers dropped a tough loss to nationally ranked Great American Conference opponent Southeastern Saturday afternoon. With a tight score in the first half, the Black-and-Red were not able to keep it close in the second half and dropped the match-up with a score of 52-73. NWOSU's offense was led by Redshirt Junior Jack Peck who earned 16 points, one steal, and went 5-6 from beyond the arc.

Other important Rangers included Senior Jaedon Whitfield with 10 points, and five rebounds. Senior A.J. Jones tallied eight points of his own with two steals, one block, and five rebounds, as well as a team leading six assists of the teams nine in the game. Junior Parrish Hewitt had three blocked shots; Eric Andres Jr. led the team with three steals and David Thornton earned a team high seven rebounds.

Northwestern gave the number 18th ranked team in the nation a run for their money through most of the first half of the ball game. SOSU snatched an early 15-2 lead but a huge three from Peck gave the Rangers some needed momentum. Ten straight points from Peck rallied the Black-and-Red and gave them their first lead of the game 21-20 with almost eight minutes left in the first half. The Savage Storm began to pull away at the end of the first half. However, efforts from Whitfield and Jones brought NWOSU back to within five with a score of 28-33 as both teams headed into halftime.

Southeastern jumped to an early lead in the second half. The Black-and-Red struggled to find any sort of rhythm through the second half of the game. Once the Savage Storm grabbed a double-digit lead Northwestern could not seem to rally enough to come back despite efforts from Whitfield and Jones. As the minutes dwindled SOSU earned their largest lead of the night at 23 and secured the win with only 1:29 left on the clock. A final three from Peck was all the Rangers could muster before taking the loss with a score of 52-73.

The Rangers defense was a proud point for Head Coach Vinay Patel. The Savage Storm averaged nine turnovers per game and the Black-and-Red were able to earn 19 total from Southeastern as well as using those to score 20 points to their 14. NWOSU was also able to keep the SOSU bench from helping the cause. Only four points came from the Savage Storm bench compared to the Rangers 23 points. Southeastern did lead in rebounds with 42 to Northwestern's 29.

The Rangers are scheduled to play another Great American Conference opponent Monday evening against East Central University at 7:00 p.m. in Percefull Fieldhouse. They follow the Lady Rangers game that begins at 5:00 p.m.
