ALVA, Okla. – The Red- and Black looked to make it four straight wins Saturday afternoon but were fought off by the Savage Storm 68-54. Southeastern opened the game on a 17-3 run which was just to strong for Northwestern Saturday afternoon.
The Lady Rangers had three players hit double digits in scoring in Kalea King, Jakeria Otey, and Bailey Brown. King finished with 14 on 7-12 shooting. Brown posted her third double-double of the season finishing with 11 points and 12 rebounds. Lastly Otey finished the game with 13 points on 5-17 shooting.
Southeastern was led by Katie Webb who finished with 19 and Neely Noel who took advantage of some scoring chances by hitting six 3-pointers.
The Savage Storm controlled the game through their defense and taking advantage of the glass. Southeastern forced 15 turnovers getting 12 points from the turnovers. They won the rebounds 49-39 while grabbing nine offensive rebounds leading to 14 second chance points.
This game started slow as neither team would score until the 6:52 mark in the first quarter when Katie Webb opened the scoring with a jumper in the paint. Southeastern controlled the game in every aspect of it. The Lady Rangers could never get on que in the opening quarter as they shot 3-14, along with 0-5 from deep with six turnovers. Southeastern took full advantage of this knocking down four 3-pointers and shooting 7-18 from the field. The Storm won the opening quarter 22-7.
The second quarter was much improved for NWOSU as they turned the ball over only three times and capitalized on the extra possessions by knocking down 50% of their shots from the field, along with three 3-pointers. The defense picked up as well holding the Storm to 2-12 from deep as the Lady Rangers would cut into the Savage Storm's deficit after winning the quarter 19-16 would have them trailing by 12 at the break.
The first half was controlled by Southeastern as they led the entire half against Northwestern, and would lead 38-26 into halftime.
The Red-and-Black would take two minutes before hitting the first bucket of the second half. After the Savage Storm grabbed four straight points building a 16-point lead, Northwestern answered. The home team knocked off a 9-0 run as Otey hit a three and a layup to start the run. A block by Southeastern's Logan Oestreich started the Savage Storm's answer though. After the deficit was brought to seven Southeastern went on a 16-5 run to get the lead back to 16. The third quarter came to a close with Northwestern trailing 58-44.
The fourth quarter saw a lot of defense as that is how Southeastern would keep the Lady Rangers away. The quarter saw a total of 20 points, 10 from each team, and a combined 8-32 from the field. The deficit was brought to as low as 10 in the fourth quarter but could not find any way to get it closer.
The Lady Rangers never led in this one after the slow start. They struggled to get to the foul line in this one as Southeastern played great defense. Northwestern came into the game averaging 19.6 foul shots but would only shoot six this afternoon, while averaging 15 made attempts but only had two today. The Lady Rangers finished the game shooting 34.3% compared to Southeastern's 40% in this one.
This loss drops the Lady Rangers to 5-4 on the year, and falling to 1-2 in Great American Conference play. Southeastern improves to 5-1 on the year and 3-0 in GAC play with their win.
With finals weeks taking place this week the red-and-black will have the week off and be back in action on Monday, December 16 at 5:00pm as they take on the Tigers of East Central.
