ALVA, Okla. – Hits were hard to come by Sunday afternoon for the Northwestern Oklahoma State University baseball team as the Rangers dropped game one of a three-game conference series with Oklahoma Baptist, 12-4.
Northwestern (10-2, 3-1) and OBU (6-6, 2-2) will play a doubleheader Monday afternoon at Myers Stadium to conclude the series. First pitch of game one, a nine inning contest, is set for 1 p.m. with the second game beginning approximately 20 minutes following the first. The second game is scheduled as a seven-inning game.
Justin Bundy had a good afternoon for the Rangers, accounting for three of the four runs put on the board by Northwestern. Bundy started the scoring for Northwestern when he reached on a fielder's choice with the bases loaded that pushed in Daschal Johnson.
The Rangers held on to the 1-0 lead until the Bison were able to plate four runs in the top of the third with the help of a couple doubles and a home run to make it 4-1.
In the bottom of the inning, the Rangers cut the lead to 4-3. Following base on balls by Luis Cintron, Carlos Andujar and Luis Mendoza, Cintron crossed the plate on a wild pitch with Johnnuelle Ponce at the plate. Ponce followed with a single to bring across Andujar.
OBU added another run in the top of the sixth, before Bundy struck again on the first pitch in the bottom of the inning with a solo blast to almost straight away center field for his fourth home run of the season.
Unfortunately, the Rangers were held hitless in the final three innings while the Bison tacked on seven more runs in the eighth and ninth innings combine for the 12-4 final.
Joining Bundy and Ponce with hits were Mendoza and Jake White, who ripped a double down the left field line in the fifth inning.
Kyle Rogers (1-1) took the loss for the Rangers and Jesus Chavez (3-0) was the winning pitcher in the game after 6.1 innings of two hit ball in relief for the Bison.
