ENID, Okla. – Despite the beautiful weather and a great crowd Tuesday night at David Allen Memorial Ballpark, it was a tough day for Northwestern Oklahoma State University as they fell to Oklahoma Wesleyan, 16-4.
Northwestern dropped to 22-20 on the season. The Rangers look to rebound Friday when they play host to Southeastern Oklahoma State at 6 p.m. at Glass Family Field at Myers Stadium. The weekend series conclude Saturday with a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
After being named Great American Conference Player of the Week earlier in the day, Johnnuelle Ponce continued his hot stretch against the Eagles with his sixth home run in four games, and league leading 17th of the season, as well as a triple. Ponce drove in all for run for the Rangers.
Luis Cintron and Greg Carrington had extra base hits with a double each. Justin Bundy added a single for the Rangers.
In the bottom of the first inning, with the Eagles leading the Rangers 1-0, Ponce hit a blast to left field to continue his home run stretch. Daschal Johnson led off the game with a single and scored on the homer.
The Eagles plated four runs in the second and five runs in the third. Ponce narrowly missed his second home run of the game in the bottom of the third as a hit that bounced off the top of the brick wall and came back into the field of play. In what ended up being a triple, Cintron and Carrington scored on the sequence.
Oklahoma Wesleyan scored six more unanswered run to seal the victory.
It was a staff day for Ranger pitches as eight were used in the seven inning contest. Kyle Rogers was credited with the loss.
