Northwestern drops home opener against Southeastern 24-15

ALVA, Okla. – The Northwestern Oklahoma State University football team dropped a tough battle in the valley falling to Southeastern Oklahoma State 24-15 on Saturday at Ranger Field.
 
The loss for the Rangers moves them to 1-1 on the year and in Great American Conference play with a Sept. 21 matchup at No. 6 Ouachita Baptist slated for 6 p.m. at Benson-Williams Field at Cliff Harris Stadium.
 
Northwestern had no issues moving the ball this week finishing the contest with 401 total yards, but were hurt with three major turnovers. Jacob Peyton paced Northwestern on the ground collecting 109 rushing yard on 17 carries, while Calion Baker had 60 yards on nine attempts. Torrence Stevens rushed for the Rangers lone touchdown on a 19-yard run in the second quarter. 

The NWOSU passing attack posted 213 total yards, led by Trent Easley who went 14-34 with a touchdown.
 
Kentrez Bell was the top target for the second straight week with 88 yards on two catches, with a 45-yard touchdown, while Gavin Garner and Peyton each had 38 yards, Garner on two catches and Peyton had three grabs.
 
Nick Dill connected on his first field goal of the season and finished the night 1-of-2 kicking.
 
Defensively, Maurice Wright was all over the Savage Storm with a team-high 13 tackles, six of which were solo and 0.5 tackles for loss. James Ellis, starting in spot of Dakota Driskill, added six tackles, the first two sacks of the season for the Rangers, and four solo tackles. Christopher Fuzeme snagged an interception to go with four tackles, while Adrelan Brow recovered a fumble for NWOSU.

Southeastern got on the board first with a 31 yard field goal with 11:58 to go in the second quarter.
 
Northwestern responded and score on its ensuing drive, but a missed PAT would make the score 6-3.

SOSU's CJ Shavers answered back with a 34 yard touchdown to go back in front 10-6.
 
Dill would tack on a field goal with 1:58 to go in the half to close it to 10-9 at halftime.

SOSU would score again after a Northwestern turnover to increase their lead to 17-9 leaving that the score heading to the fourth quarter.
 
Easley would connect with Bell on back-to-back 40+ yard passes for a touchdown, but the Rangers missed the two-point conversion attempt, after an offensive penalty.

With just under two minutes to go SOSU added to their lead going ahead 24-15 on a Shavers 15 yrd run.

Northwestern would move the ball into deep into Southeastern's territory on the final drive, but Easley's pass was picked off with 31 seconds to play in the end zone.
