Northwestern Splits on Final Day of Classic

HAYS, Kan.– Northwestern Oklahoma State University split the second day of the Tiger Classic as they took one from Chadron State College but dropped the next to the host team of Fort Hays University. The Black-and-Red now have a record of 5-4.

A dominating performance came from Northwestern against Chadron State which showed off their talent as they took the match [25-16, 27-25, 23-25, 18-25]. The host team of the Tiger Classic, Fort Hays University, took the momentum in the final match of the tournament and never let go. The Rangers lost to the Tigers [25-20, 19-25, 19-25, 18-25].

Kiauna Clark had another astounding day as she earned a team-leading 27 kills through both matches, with a hit percentage of .471 against Chadron state while also earning five blocks. Kaydee Honeycutt was not far behind with 25 kills, 3 service aces, and 37 digs. Jennifer Eubanks had 21 kills of her own with 13 total blocks which led the team. Kaitlyn Robinson led the team in assists with 56, while Sydnee Miller led the team in digs with 40.

Game 1: Chadron State College

The Rangers, led by Clark, had an exceptional match with multiple players scoring thirteen or more kills in Clark (19), Honeycutt (13) and Eubanks (12). Clark had a hit percentage of .471 while Eubanks earned nine blocks. Northwestern started off dominating but CSC answered back which made for 27 ties and nine lead changes throughout the match.

The first set started with a 7-0 run from the Rangers with back-to-back kills from Clark. Followed shortly by another 9-0 run to put the Rangers up 13-4 as they took advantage of some Eagles errors and never let go of the lead. They took the first set with an excellent score of 25-16.

The Rangers started the match off hot with two more kills from Clark, but the Eagles fought back. The second set alone accounted for 17 total ties and four lead changes between the two teams. The Eagles went on a four-point run in order to tie the set 17-17. Another final smash from Clark added to her eight kills in the set alone and give the Rangers the second game with a score of 27-25.

The third set started like the others with the Black-and-Red taking an early lead. However, the Eagles came storming back tying the game at 10-10. Chadron State College showed off their arms with 13 kills and pulled to a 23-17 lead. Northwestern, with the help of aces by Miller and Eubanks, tied the game back up 23-23 but were not able to hang on as CSC took the set 25-23.

Northwestern refused to back down and came back roaring in the fourth and final set. The Black-and-Red pulled to an 18-9 lead with the help from freshman Courtney Russell and did not let up. The Eagles fought back but just could not reach the Rangers as Clark has another final slam to end the fourth set 25-18, which took the match 3-1.

Game 2: Fort Hays University

The Fort Hays match was a tough loss as the Rangers battled back-and-forth with the Tiger Classic host team. There were 29 ties and 13 different lead changes between the two teams. Honeycutt had an astounding 12 kills on match while Eubanks earned a .300 hit percentage.

With 12 ties and five lead changes in the first set alone, both teams came to play. Honeycutt led the way with five kills and helped push the Rangers 25-20 win of the Tigers. It was back and forth for the whole game with Northwestern slowly pulling away to a five-point lead.

The next set is a bit of a different story as the Tigers planned to change the momentum of the game. After taking the lead 14-11, Fort Hays went on a 7-0 run and never stepped off the gas. After two service aces from the Tigers they finished off the set 25-19.

The third set was quite like the second set with the Tigers taking control early on. Northwestern stayed right on their tales but could not take the momentum from Fort Hays. A 4-0 run from the Rangers late in the game gave some hope but was not enough and FHU took the third set with another score of 25-19.

The Black-and-Red continued to go back-and-forth with the Tigers through the fourth set as they refused to give up without a fight. After tying the game 7-7 the Tigers went on a five-point run that really solidified their lead.

Fort Hays continued to show off their arms as they extended their lead 19-13. A 4-0 run from Northwestern late in the game got them close but was not enough. Fort Hays took the fourth and final set 25-18 and therefore took the match 3-1.

Northwestern will be back in Percefull Fieldhouse at 7 p.m. to face-off against East Central University to start their Great American Conference season next Tuesday evening.
