Rangers Drop Tough Loss to Weevils

MONTICELLO, Ark. - Northwestern Oklahoma State University faced off against a tough Great American Conference opponent in the University of Arkansas at Monticello Saturday afternoon. The Weevils pulled away in the latter half of the first half and held that lead all the way through the second half despite the Rangers efforts. UAM took their fifth GAC win with a score of 73-93. Northwestern's offense was led by Jaedon Whitfield who earned 17 points, five rebounds, and one block.

Other stand-out Rangers included Parrish Hewitt who continues to play well with 16 points, team-leading six rebounds, as well as going 7-for-8 from the free throw line. A.J. Jones and Clive Allen each earned nine points while Andrew Clopton was a spark off the bench with eight points to himself.

The Rangers jumped to a good start, but the Weevils quickly answered with their own run to take the lead and would hang onto it for the rest of the half. Arkansas Monticello quickly began to pull away and earned a sixteen-point lead around the seven-minute mark of the first half. The Black-and-Red attempted to fight back with two back-to-back layups from Whitfield and Clopton. Unfortunately, UAM continued to pay well and took a 19-point lead into the half with a score of 37-56.

Northwestern came out hot in the second half with seven straight points that got started with a three from Jones that cut the lead to 12. The Rangers fought to stay in the game as they battled to keep with fifteen at the most until around the 10 minute mark when the Weevil's offense again took off. Two straight scoring possessions, a three from Jack Peck and a lay-up from Whitfield, from NWOSU got them within 11 with five minutes left in the second half. The Weevils answered and finished the game with a win and a score of 73-93.

Northwestern's bench outscored the Weevil bench 23 to 17 and created a spark to keep the team in the game through most of the second half. The Rangers also led with 32 points in the paint compared to Arkansas Monticello's 26. However, UAM earned 17 points off of turnovers, and had 14 second chance points that gave them the edge.

The Rangers will return to Percefull Fieldhouse for their first game at home of 2020. The Black-and-Red will face GAC opponent Henderson State University. Tip-off is at 7:30 p.m. following the Lady Rangers game Thursday evening.
