Lady Rangers Comeback Effort Falls Short

Durant, Okla. – The Lady Rangers looked to take down the Savage Storm of Southeastern Oklahoma State University despite their tough loss on Thursday against long time school rival Southwestern Oklahoma State University. Although the Red-and-Black were able to cut a 21-point lead to within two points, the Lady Rangers fell short in the end 67-61.

The Lady Rangers had three players finish with double-digit scoring figures, Kalea King who led with 15 points shooting 6 for 12 from the field. Hillary Hurst scored 14 points and shot 5 for 13 from inside, and Bailey Brown who put up 12 points, 5 rebounds and shot 5 for 11 inside. Kaylyn Maple stepped up down below for the Lady Rangers after she snatched seven rebounds, three offensively and four defensively.

The Savage Storm was led offensively by Kamryn Cantwell who scored 22 points and shot 8 for 13 from the field. Cantwell went four-for-four from the free-throw line and grabbed nine rebounds. Briley Moon and Katie Webb both had 13 points each. Southeastern outrebounded the Lady Rangers 30-23 and put up a 53.3 field goal percentage out shooting Northwestern's 44.2 FG%.

Brown scored the first basket of the game 20 seconds after she won the tip-off. Savage Storm's Cantwell immediately fired back with a made three-pointer. Throughout the first quarter, both teams put up four turnovers each keeping the score just within the teens. Southeastern expected to go into the second quarter up by six points until a turnover by Chandler Kemp of the Savage Storm with 26 seconds left led to King missing a three-point basket off of the front of the rim which was rebounded offensively by Presley Payahsape who pulled up from three, made it, and cut the lead back to within three at the buzzer. The Lady Rangers were behind 19-16 going into the second quarter.

The Lady Rangers went cold during the second quarter after they only scored seven points throughout the quarter. Once the quarter started Payahsape immediately pulled up with a jumper that cut Southeastern's lead from three to just one. Northwestern didn't score again until the 5:53 minute mark when Kenzi Lamer pulled up from behind the arc and cut Southeastern's lead to 26-21. Immediately after Lamer's made a three-pointer, Southeastern's Cantwell fired back with a made three-pointer. The Lady Rangers went on a scoreless stint again until King scored a jumper that changed the score to 32-23 Southeastern leading. With 3:28 left in the first half, the Savage Storm went on a 10 and 0 scoring run that left the Lady Rangers answerless into halftime after only scoring three times in the second quarter.

The Savage Storm controlled the beginning of the second half after going up 21 points at the 9:44 minute mark of the third quarter. Even though the Lady Rangers ended the third quarter down 38-50, they held the Savage Storm to only eight points throughout the whole third quarter and outscored them by seven points. The Lady Rangers fired up throughout the fourth quarter by cutting Southeastern's large lead all the way down to within two. The momentum change occurred late in the fourth when Hurst answered from outside of the three-pointer line from an assist by Lamer with one minute left in the game, the late basket put the score at 61-57 Southeastern still leading. With just 50 seconds remaining King shot a layup that was good and got fouled by Cantwell. King clutched the free-throw and pulled Northwestern to within three. The score was 63-60 and Lady Ranger point guard Kyleigh Leverich stole the ball from Cantwell, tossed it to Brown who was fouled and immediately went to the line to shoot free throws. Brown made the first one cutting the lead to 63-61, the second three throw rolled off the rim. After a couple of timeouts were called, Southeastern's Tracy Johnson and Katie Webb were able to keep their lead and win the game after both making each of their free-throws from late fouls. The final score was 67-61 with Southeastern coming out on top.

Northwestern's Lady Rangers are now 11-13 overall, and 7-11 in Great American Conference play. Southeastern improves to 16-6 overall and 13-5 in GAC play.
