Northwestern Drops Opening Conference Weekend

ALVA, Okla.– Northwestern Oklahoma State University Rangers continued conference play against Oklahoma Baptist University Saturday afternoon in the second half of a four-game series at home. The Rangers had dropped their first half of the series as OBU showed off their talented offense through all 12 innings of play.

Despite great outings from multiple members of the offense, the Rangers dropped both games to the Bison with scores of 11-4 and 10-8. The Red-and-Black now sits with a record of 2-8, with a conference mark of 0-4, while the Bison even their record to 8-8, with a 4-0 GAC mark. Taylor Zanca took her second loss of the year in the first game while Ariel Forsyth started the second match-up.

The Red-and-Black tallied 16 hits through both games with eight in each. Two different players took advantage of their opportunities in Joey Casey and Mesa Gann who both came off the bench. Casey led the Rangers with four hits on six at-bats while earning two runs and two RBI's. Gann came in halfway through a count and was able to produce as she went 2-for-7 with three RBI's and one run.

Kalie Johnson also had herself a game as she went 3-for-5 with two runs and one RBI. Lindsey McElroy broke out in the second game with two hits, two RBI's and one run. Morgan La Neve, Alexus Bailey and Jayden Flowers each had one hit apiece.

Game 1

The Rangers fought a tough battle through the first game. The Bison were able to jump ahead quickly in the beginning of the first inning with a two-run homerun to take a 2-0 lead. The Red-and-Black were retired in order and were unable to plate any runs.

The Bison kept their hot bats going through the top of the second inning with another solo homerun over right field that led-off the inning. Things quickly spiraled out of control with hit-after-hit which allowed Oklahoma Baptist to take a 6-0 on four hits in the inning. Freshman Hannah Howell came into the game and quickly shut things down on the mound to get the Rangers into their half of the inning.

Back-to-back doubles for the Red-and-Black from Bailey and Gann, who came into the game after Emily Poindexter took a ball off the hand. This cut the lead to 6-1.

OBU quickly answered back with back-to-back singles, a sacrifice bunt, and an RBI ground-out to first base. The Bison defense was able to hold the Rangers to zero runs through most of the middle innings.

The Bison added four more runs in the top of the fifth and the sixth inning, with a single and RBI double for a run in the fifth, and a two-run homerun and another RBI single in the top of the sixth. The Rangers answered back in the bottom half of the inning with three runs of their own. Two Bison errors and two doubles gave Northwestern enough to cut the lead.

After holding the Bison in the top of the seventh the Red-and-Black were unable to plate any more runs despite a single from Johnson and took the loss with a final score of 11-4.

Game 2

Oklahoma Baptist jumped on top quickly in the second game with a three-hit four-run inning in the top of the first. A lead-off double started things followed by an RBI single which led to a bases-loaded situation with a bases-clearing double to tally four runs in the first inning. However, the Rangers were to roll over.

A lead-off walk followed by a bunt that turned into a single for the Rangers gave them just the momentum they needed. There was a total of four hits in the inning as well as four walks and one hit-by-pitch that allowed Northwestern's top half of the lineup to hit twice. The Red-and-Black snatched the lead 6-4.

Back-to-back singles gave the Bison some hope in the top of the second and helped them add one more run to their total, but the Rangers defense was able to prevent them from scoring any more runs to hold their lead 5-6.

The third inning was a tough one for the Red-and-Black with the Bison tallying four more runs on three hits. A lead-off solo homerun started the inning off with a bang and allowed Oklahoma Baptist to take back the lead with a score of 9-6. Johnson singled in the bottom half of the third and was quickly followed by a McElroy RBI double deep into the left-center gap to cut the lead 9-7.

Both teams held their end of the inning with stellar defense to prevent any runs from being in scored in the fourth and fifth innings.

With only two full innings left to play and a two-run lead, the Bison knew they had to change something and did just that with back-to-back sacrifice bunts and a squeeze bunt to score their 10th run of the game.

The Red-and-Black took care of business in the top of the seventh to give themselves some momentum headed into their last at-bat of the weekend. Solberg drew a lead-off walk to start the inning who was then pinch-ran for by Shelbie Roberson, who stole second and scored on an RBI ground-out to make the score 10-8. Unfortunately, that was all they could muster and took the loss.

The Rangers next game will be on Tuesday, February 25th, 2020 as they face-off against the rescheduled out-of-conference opponent Southwest Baptist. The first pitch of the doubleheader will take place at 2:00 p.m. with the second game to follow.
