Rangers Return Home With Win Over Newman

ALVA, Okla- The Rangers were ready to take on Newman University after the game got moved a couple of different times by first moving the game to Alva, then getting postponed on Tuesday to be moved to Wednesday afternoon, because of the weather. Rangers were set to play this one by jumping out to an early 3-0 lead and led the rest of the game before finishing off an 11-6 win over Newman University Wednesday afternoon.

 

Daschal Johnson led the Rangers offense with three hits, three runs, and a four-RBI day. Jake Darrow led the teams in hits as well tied with Johnson with three. Darrow scored a run as well on the day. Brock Randels finished the day with two hits and two RBIs as well. Bryce Donovan, Parker Base, Colton Whitehouse, and Jake White each had an RBI on the day as well.

 

Harry Park got the call to start Wednesday afternoon as he would go two innings giving up two runs on two hits, along with four walks. Emilio Lovato was the first man in relief pitching 1.2 innings of scoreless baseball with three strikeouts. Beau Britton was the next man up as he went 1.1 innings allowing two runs. Jacob Uhing would relieve him with two scoreless innings. Koby Spicer and Koby Hudson would each go one inning allowing one earned run each, 

 

After Park worked around a leadoff walk to keep the Jets scoreless in the opening frame. The Rangers responded with a big inning sending three across the plate. Darrow would lead things off with a single to left field. After a Donovan walk, Base stepped up and roped a double to left-center field driving home both Donovan and Hamakawa. Johnson came to the plate next and hit a single up the middle to give the Rangers a 3-0 lead. 

 

The Jets did their best to respond fast as they loaded the bases in the top half of the second inning. Park, however, battled through another jam this time escaping the bases-loaded jam and holding the game at 3-0.

 

Newman was able to get to Park in the third though with two runs scoring across the plate. With runners on second and third Will Jordan hit a single to drive in a pair of runs for the Jets cutting the gap to one in a 3-2 game.  

 

The Red-and-Black wasted no time answering back at the Jets, as Johnson drew a walk in the bottom of the third. After he moved to second on a passed ball he would take advantage of a wild pitch as he not only got to third but found a way to score on the same pitch as well, extending the lead to 4-2. 

 

Lavato pitched a scoreless fourth inning for the Rangers keeping momentum with them into the bottom half of their inning. Rangers used that to help strike again in the fourth after a Randels walk, he stole second and third to create a scoring opportunity. White would deliver with a double down the left-field line extending the Ranger lead to 5-2 after four innings.

 

Newman would bounce right back though with two quick runs in the fifth inning. With a runner on first, Koch would hit a triple to deep center field scoring one run. The next batter Reeves would follow with an RBI single after he would beat out an infield single. 

 

The Rangers holding a 5-4 run would go right back at the Jets with Whitehouse in scoring position Randels would hit a single back up the middle for the RBI single increasing the lead back to 6-4. 

 

The sixth inning Northwestern's bats continued to produce, by tacking on three more runs. With runners on second, and third. Donovan would hit a single up the middle, Hamakawa would get thrown out at the plate, but Darrow would score on the play for the first run of the inning. Johnson would step up with a double to left-center bringing Donovan home. The final run of the inning would come from a Whitehouse single to right field. 

 

The Jets would get one back on an RBI double in the top of the eighth inning. However Northwestern continued to do something they did all night and that was responding to each run Newman got. In the bottom of the inning, Johnson singled home Mekhi Edwards, which was followed by a Randels double to center scoring Johnson giving Northwestern an 11-5 lead at the time. 

 

The final score would be in favor of Northwestern 11-6. 

 

The win brings Northwestern to 6-10 on the season, 5-4 at home. The win Wednesday afternoon snapped a four-game losing streak, as the Rangers will look to take that win into the weekend against Southern Arkansas.
