Wimmer with 29 kills and 30 digs in Five Set Thriller Friday Night

ALVA, Oklahoma- Northwestern Oklahoma State closed out their regular season Friday evening with a five-set match against the Bulldogs of Southwestern. The visitors used a solid middle part of the match, taking sets two and three to gain the 2-1 match lead before winning the match in the fifth set. 

 The win improves the Bulldogs record to 19-7 on the season with a 13-3 conference record.

The Rangers were led by Addison Wimmer with 29 kills on the evening match, setting the Rangers' new school record for most kills in a match. Kaydee Honeycutt finished with 19 kills, followed by Courtney Russell with five. Abby Davis led the team with 30 assists on the evening, followed by Kelsey Ripperger with 21 and Tarra Parks with six. Parks led the team with 34 digs, Wimmer with 30 digs, and Honeycutt with 23 digs.

SET 1: 

The Rangers jumped out fast Friday night; after allowing the first point, the Rangers rattled off four straight points to take a quick 4-1 lead. Russell got the scoring started with a kill which was followed by a Honeycutt service ace and a Wimmer kill. Southwestern wasted no time responding with four quick points to take their one-point lead back with a 5-4 lead. The match would stay within one point for most of the opening set as the two teams traded points. A Ravyn Burns kill pushed the deficit back to one at 11-10. A late 4-0 run pushed the Rangers back to a five-point deficit at 18-13. However, Northwestern was ready to fight back as the team would slowly chip back into the set. With the Rangers trailing by six, a Southwestern error would spark a Northwestern run helping the Rangers close the gap to a 22-20 deficit. The Rangers would use a 4-0 run from a Honeycutt kill to regain the lead at 24-23. The opening set was tied 25-25 before two Wimmer kills in the final three points would help the Rangers win the opening set 28-26 and take an early 1-0 match lead. 

SET 2:

The Bulldogs jumped out fast this time with the first five points of the second set to take an early 5-0 lead. A Honeycutt kills followed by a service ace for Honeycutt gave Northwestern two quick points looking to get back into the set. Southwestern pushed their lead to 9-2 following a 4-0 run after the two Northwestern points. Wimmer would start the next Rangers run with a kill to put Northwestern right back in the set, cutting the deficit back to two at 10-8 in favor of the Bulldogs. The visitors' 6-1 run would put the Bulldog lead back to seven at 16-9. The Bulldogs would continue to keep the Rangers distant, this time matching point for point and maintaining their lead at seven with a 20-13 lead. The visitors would close the second set out with a 25-17 set two victory to even the set at 1-1. 

SET 3: 

The two teams traded runs early on in the third set with three quick points before the Rangers would answer back with two blocks from Honeycutt and Jones to even the score at 4-4. The third set would continue to be a battle as the teams would even the score at 7-7 continued to trade points. A kill from Wimmer followed by a Wimmer service ace would keep Northwestern in front in the third set with a 13-12 lead. A Southwestern 5-0 run would give the Bulldogs some control in the third set going up 17-14 and giving them their first lead since the opening points of the third set. With the Bulldogs ahead by two points at 20-18, Northwestern would regain the lead at 22-20 following a 4-0 run with two kills from Wimmer set up by assists from Ripperger. The two teams would be locked at 25-25 following a kill by Honeycutt. The Bulldogs would use back-to-back kills from Morgan to win the third set 28-26 over the Rangers and take a 2-1 match lead. 

SET 4: 
Northwestern looking to extend the match, would trade points early in the fourth set with three ties in the opening six points. Northwestern would gain slight control early with four consecutive points to take a 7-3 lead following a Honeycutt kill. A Honeycutt and Wimmer kills would continue to pace the Rangers, holding a three-point advantage at 10-7 in the set and eventually pushing the lead to five at 12-7. The Rangers having the five-point lead is when Southwestern would climb back with a four straight to move their deficit to one at 17-16. A Davis service ace followed by a Russell kill gave the Red-and-Black a 22-18 lead. With the Rangers leading 23-20, Honeycutt would close the set out with back-to-back kills of her own to give the Rangers a 25-20 set win and even the match at 2-2. 

SET 5: 

The even match could not have a closer fifth set to open the deciding set with the team's trading point for point with a 4-4 set through the opening eight points. The Bulldogs held a 6-4 lead before a quick 3-0 run to push the Rangers back in front at 7-6 following a Madison Dehlinger kill. The Rangers would get back-to-back kills from Burns, Wimmer, and Russell, giving the Rangers a 10-8 lead in the fifth set. Northwestern would hold the two-point lead up until 12-10. With the two-point lead out of a Southwestern timeout, the Bulldogs stormed to five straight points to win the set at 15-12 and to take the match overall at 3-2. 

The Friday night match closed the regular season for the Rangers finishing the season with a 10-20 record overall with a 5-11 Great American Conference record.
