Lady Rangers Defeat the Savage Storm in Overtime

ALVA, Okla. – The Lady Rangers were victorious in overtime after they defeated the Savage Storm of Southeastern Oklahoma State 73-65 Thursday night in Percefull Fieldhouse. 
 
"I thought our girls were resilient tonight and just kept fighting. I'm so proud of their fight and how we finished in overtime." Head Coach Tasha Diesselhorst says. 
 
"We made some big stops on the defensive end when we needed to." 
 
"Lizzie made a big play to send it into overtime and then Jo and Scout's back-to-back threes were huge," Diesselhorst explains. 
 
"Jarah also gave us a good spark off the bench with some quality minutes down the stretch."
 
Northwestern improves to 5-9 overall and 3-9 in the Great American Conference, while Southeastern moves to 8-6 overall and 8-6 in GAC play. 
 
Scout Frame scored 25 points off of 11-for-19 shooting. S. Frame finished shooting a perfect 1-for-1 from the three-point line and 2-for-3 from free throw range. She grabbed six rebounds, assisted two Lady Rangers and blocked one Southeastern opponent. 
 
Lizzie Shephard finished with 14 points, three rebounds, one steal, one block and two assists. Shephard shot 5-of-12 from the field, including 3-of-5 from the three-point line. 
 
Jarah Whitfield snagged five rebounds, scored 11 points, blocked one Savage Storm player and assisted her teammates twice. Whitfield finished shooting a perfect 3-for-3 from deep and 4-for-6 from the field. 
 
Josena Frame stole the ball from the Savage Storm three times and scored 10 points. She also recorded four rebounds and two assists. 
 
Bailey Brown posted an impressive stat line of 10 points, nine rebounds and eight assists. Brown blocked and stole the ball twice from Southeastern and finished shooting 4-for-9 from the field. 
 
Mya Johnson finished with six rebounds and three points.

FIRST QUARTER
S. Frame rolled in back-to-back layups to open the scoring for the Red-and-Black. Kamryn Cantwell of SOSU tossed in their first score after she drained a three-pointer that was assisted by Katie Branam. J. Frame, Brown and Whitfield rolled in scores throughout the first 10 minutes of play, but Branam was able to keep the Savage Storm ahead by three points after she rolled in a layup to close the first quarter. SECOND QUARTER
Briley Moon of the Savage Storm opened the second quarter with a missed three pointer that Brown grabbed and tossed to S. Frame, who rolled in the Lady Rangers' first score of the period. Brown back-to-back assists after Shephard drained Northwestern's first deep score. The Red-and-Black jumped ahead by five points at the five-minute mark after Shephard hit another three-pointer followed by a layup and free throw from Brown. Shephard closed the first half by keeping the Lady Rangers ahead of the Savage Storm by three after she swished another outside score along with an inside jumper. (29-26, NW) 
 
THIRD QUARTER
Northwestern jumped ahead of Southeastern by 11 points after S. Frame rattled in a pair of free throws, followed by inside scores from Brown and J. Frame and a deep three-point score from Whitfield. Johnson scored two from a pair of free throws and S. Frame drained back-to-back inside scores. The Savage Storm were able to make a third quarter comeback after they were able to rattle in two perfect pairs of free throws from Cantwell and Jordan Benson, followed by an outside score from Branam. (46-45, SOSU)
 
FOURTH QUARTER
Aimee Alverson of Southeastern scored first in the fourth quarter, followed by back-to-back scores from S. Frame. Whitfield swished her second three pointer of the night at the five-minute mark and Branam answered back for Southeastern with an outside score. S. Frame went back-to-back again down below, followed by an inside jumper from Shephard. The Lady Rangers finished the final quarter of regulation tied at 58 with the Savage Storm. Cantwell tried to defeat Northwestern by driving in for a layup with three seconds left in the game, but it rolled off the rim and the Red-and-Black quickly prepared for their first overtime of the season. (58-58, OVERTIME)
 
OVERTIME
Brown scored the first basket in overtime, followed by a made free throw from J. Frame. Benson drained a three pointer for SOSU, but Whitfield fired back with her third and final deep score of the night. After a media timeout, the Frame sisters drilled a pair three pointers to go up seven points on Southeastern. Shephard and J. Frame secured the eight-point overtime victory after they rattled in their free throws. Northwestern defeated the Savage Storm in overtime inside Percefull Fieldhouse, 73-65.

Branam finished scoring 13 points shooting 5-for-15 from the field. She tallied three rebounds, one steal, one block and three assists. 
 
Moon grabbed eight rebounds, scored 12 points, assisted three teammates and stole the ball from the Lady Rangers twice. 
 
Cantwell scored 11 points and snagged seven rebounds. She recorded three steals and three assists. 
 
Haiden Williams rounded out the Savage Storm's double-digit scorers with 10 points, one assist and one rebound. 
 
NEXT UP: Saturday, Feb. 13, the Red-and-Black will travel to Ada and face the Tigers of East Central at 2 p.m.
