ALVA, Okla- Northwestern Oklahoma State dropped the conference game Monday evening to Southwestern 93-86 in Percefull Fieldhouse. The Bulldogs used a 17-2 run late in the second half to pull away for the Monday night victory as the Rangers did not recover.
The Rangers fall to 2-10 on the season 0-10 in Great American Conference play, as the Bulldogs improve to 7-8 on the season and in conference play.
The Red-and-Black, led by Arturro Bingham, was one of two players to score in double figures. Bingham finished the game with 20 points and two rebounds in fifteen minutes of work as he shot five for five from behind the arc. Deon Barrett was the other Ranger in double figures finishing the game with 19 points and 11 assists for his first double-double on the season. The 11 assists were a game-high.
Southwestern led by Damion Thornton as he finished with a game-high 23 points on 8 of 10 shooting along with seven rebounds and three steals. Thornton was joined by four other players in double figures as Tauriawn Knight finished with 20 points, Chris Braggs 15 points, Khobe Austin-Johnson 13 points, and Kamden Gipson with 11 points. Thornton and Knight led with seven rebounds for the Bulldogs. Southwestern went 81.8% from the foul line hitting 36 foul shots in the win.
Bingham started the game fast for the Rangers as he hit back-to-back threes to open the game for the Rangers, the home team, a quick 6-2 lead. The opening minutes of Monday's games were an offensive battle with the teams trading shot for shot. The game, locked at 11 at the first media break of the evening.
Right out of the time out, the Bulldogs used a balanced attack to open a 9-2 run to build a seven-point lead behind baskets from Knight and Thornton, followed by foul shots from Austin-Johnson. This run led to the halfway point of the opening half, the Bulldogs now in front 20-13.
The Rangers countered the Bulldog run following the break with an 11-4 run to even the game back at 24 around the seven-minute mark. Cole Jones knocked down back-to-back threes during the Ranger run followed by Oscar Maldonado hitting a triple.
The offensive battle continued with the teams trading basket for basket as Barrett three would even the game at 33 all heading into the final media timeout. A Matej Drgon tip-in layup during the final second of the half sent the Rangers into the break with a 45-44 halftime lead.
Southwestern opened the second half on fire opening the second on an 8-0 run in the first two in half minutes capped off by a Thornton dunk. The Rangers out of the timeout though would hit back-to-back threes from Bingham and Derrick White Jr. bringing the Rangers back within one. Bingham and Barrett would cap off a 9-1 run to regain the lead for the Rangers at 54-53
After Damion Thornton would knock down two free throws to put Southwestern back up three Jones had another idea evening the score with his third three of the night, locking the score at 64 halfway through the second half.
Southwestern would make their biggest run at the 9:37 mark of the second half with the Bulldogs ahead 69-68. They used a mix of offense and defense to create a 14-0 run opening a 15 point lead at the six-minute mark of the second half. During that run, the Rangers shot 0-6 with three turnovers.
Bingham would score eight straight for the Rangers but the Bulldogs had an answer on the other end, each team not allowing the Rangers to creep any closer into that deficit. The Rangers would get as close as five with sixteen seconds left following a Parrish Hewitt three-pointer, but Knight foul shots would seal the victory for the Bulldogs at 93-86.
The Rangers will return to action on Thursday evening for their final regular-season road game against Southeastern in Durant, Oklahoma. The game is scheduled for a 7:30 tip-off following the Lady Rangers game at 5:30 that evening.
