Rangers sweep Sterling 4-3, 8-0

STERLING, Kan. – Northwestern scored 12 runs on the day and saw its pitching staff combine to allow three runs on its way to a doubleheader sweep of Sterling (Kan.) on Tuesday afternoon, taking game one 4-3 before winning the nightcap 8-0.

The sweep lifts NWOSU to 3-1 to start the year heading into the Great American Conference play this weekend, playing host to Arkansas-Monticello in a three-game series beginning on Friday, the first pitch set for 5 pm.

Hannah Howell got the start in game one and tossed 5.2 innings to pick up the win, allowing no runs on two hits with eight strikeouts.

Allie Hufford would come on in relief and toss 1.1 innings and allow a hit and three runs.

Regan Burleson, Alayna Georgio, Kalie Johnson, Morgan La Neve, Lindsey McElroy, Jayden Solberg, Brianna Wisby and Allison Zanca each collected a hit.

Burleson also finished the contest with two RBI, while La Neve and Zanca each drove in one.

The game was scoreless through three innings, but the Rangers broke through in the fourth inning. Wisby and Solberg had back-to-back one-out singles and then later scored off a Burleson double to left field.

The Red-and-Black would extend their lead in the six to 4-0. McElroy got things started and came home off a Zanca double to left-center and Kelsey Housley, running for Zanca, would cross the plate two batters later with La Neve singled to left field.

The Lady Warriors would mount a comeback in the bottom of the sixth with a leadoff walk, a fielder's choice that recorded no outs, a two-run double by Sam Araiza, she would come home on a sacrifice bunt. Howell returned to the game to stop the bleeding and lock the game down. 

The score would remain the same through the seventh, with Howell sitting Sterling down to close out the game. 

In game two, La Neve, McElroy and Zanca each had three hits; Howell collected two hits, while four others had one each.

Howell and La Neve would pace the club with two RBI each in the game, while Housley, McElroy and Zanca each drove in one.

Hannah Scoggin went the distance in the circle to collect the win, tossing 7.0 innings and allowing no runs on four hits with two strikeouts.

The Rangers got things started in the second inning, with Howell leading off with a single and then coming all the way around to score on the next play after a wild throw for a 1-0 lead.

McElroy started the rally with a leadoff single in the third; Solberg later walked, La Neve would drive in McElroy. Howell doubled to deep left, scoring Solberg and Shelbie Roberson, who was running for La Neve, to stretch Northwestern's lead to 4-0.

McElroy would score in the fourth inning after doubling to start the inning and being knocked in by La Neve.

The Red-and-Black would stretch their lead to 6-0 in the fifth inning. Joey Casey started the inning with a triple to right field and scored on a Housley ground out.  

McElroy got the rally going again with a two-out double to right-center driving in Burleson, then came home to score on a Zanca single in the top of the seventh to make the score 8-0. 

Scoggin sandwiched a single between two pop-ups and a ground out to wrap up the bottom of the seventh.
