Rangers Fall to Southwestern in Season Opener

WEATHERFORD, Okla.- Northwestern dropped their conference opener 2-0 to the Bulldogs of Southwestern Sunday afternoon in Weatherford, Oklahoma. The Bulldogs used a late first half goal in the final second of the opening half to grab the first lead of the game in which they would never lose. 

Reyna Gonzalez was the starting goaltender for the Rangers finishing with four saves out of six shots on goal. The Rangers finished the game with four shots on the day from Reilly Marks, Alissa Carlson, Carlie Massingale and Payton Taylor. Carlson and Taylor had the two shots on goal for the Rangers.

Micaela Swain and Brianna Benitez led the Bulldogs Sunday afternoon with five shots from each player with them each having one goal each for the two Bulldog goals. 

The Red-and-Black tried to start fast with a shot from Reilly Marks in the opening two minutes of the game. Southwestern would respond though with two scoring chances following a shot and a foul the Bulldogs had back to back corner kick opportunities but the Ranger defense prevailed keeping the score even at 0-0. 

In the opening half the Rangers used their defense to stay within striking distance as the Bulldogs would take nine shots in the opening half to a Rangers one. Southwestern used a late first half attack to grab the first goal of the game. At the 44:23 minute mark in the first half the Bulldogs capitalized on their ninth shot with a goal right before the break by Brianna Benitez assisted by Juliana Rocha.

The Bulldogs jumped out to a fast start in the second half with three shots in the opening minutes of the second. They found the back of the net 12 minutes into the second half off of a goal by Micaela Swain assisted by Brenna McGuirk to extend the home team's lead 2-0. 

The Rangers continued to battle, having multiple scoring chances with a few shots late in the game with a corner kick opportunity as well but could not find the back of the net Sunday afternoon. The Rangers could not climb back and lost the Sunday afternoon game 2-0.  

The Rangers fall to 0-1 on the season while Southwestern improves to 2-0 on the year. The Rangers will return to action on Saturday, March 13th taking on Oklahoma Baptist.
