Rangers Battle in Overtime Loss to the Tigers

Arkadelphia, Okla.- Northwestern Soccer traveled to Arkadelphia Saturday morning for a conference matchup against Ouachita Baptist. The Tigers would use a strong second half to win in double overtime scoring the winning goal on a penalty kick. 

Northwestern would finish the game with two goals on seven shots. The goals scored by the Rangers were Clare Merrigan and Rachel Bailey. Callie Haneborg finished the game with two shots for the Rangers. There were three shots on goal for the Rangers, one from Haneborg, Bailey, and Merrigan. Reyna Gonzalez finished the game with three saves in the afternoon. 

The Red-and-Black started fast in this game controlling the ball in the opening minutes. Following a free-kick Rachel Bailey would strike first in the game with a goal on the high left side of the net to give the Rangers the first lead of the game.

The Tigers would try to answer back with a shot but the Rangers would start to regain control following a foul on Ouachita Baptist. Northwestern would take multiple shots before capitalizing on the final try by Clare Merrigan at the 27-minute mark in the first half to give the Rangers a 2-0 lead. 

The Rangers would continue to control the opening half not letting Ouachita Baptist gain any control as the Rangers maintained possession with a few more opportunities. Ouachita would have one opportunity but Northwestern would block the shot to go into halftime with a 2-0 lead. 

Right out of halftime Ouachita would come out firing with two shots in the opening minutes of the second half followed by a third shot that would miss high to give the Rangers possession back with a goal kick.

The Tiger attack would strike with a goal at the 75:38 mark in the game to bring the home team back within one goal.  Rangers would try to regain some momentum with some control of the ball getting a few shot opportunities. The Tigers would even the score though in the 81:42 mark following a penalty kick try, Josilyn Kispert for the home team would even the score with a goal in the high left side. 

The score would remain that way after the 90-minute mark, ending regulation with a 2-2 score as the Rangers would head to their first overtime game of the season. 

In the opening minute of overtime, the Rangers had a chance to take the lead with a shot early on but Michele Snow, the Tigers goalkeeper would make the save holding the score at 2-2. That was the main chance for both teams as the first overtime would end with the score still even at two. 

The Tigers would take advantage of a Northwestern foul in the second overtime as Jaymee Dotson for the Tigers would score the winning goal on a penalty kick try at the 102:31 mark. Ouachita Baptist would win the Saturday conference matchup by a final score of 3-2.  

The Red-and-Black fall to 0-3 on the season, with the same record in conference play. Northwestern will be back in action on Tuesday, March 23rd for their home opener against Harding University to start the three-game home stand to conclude the regular season.
