Northwestern Baseball Wins Fourth Straight Game with a Sweep over Ouachita Baptist

Alva, Okla-. The  Red-and-Black were able to complete the three-game sweep over Ouachita Baptist Saturday afternoon with a 5-3 come-from-behind victory after scoring in three straight innings to take the lead in which they would never let go.

The Rangers offense was led by the middle of the order Saturday morning, with their 3-7 hitters each having a hit in the series finale game. Daschal Johnson, Parker Base, and Marques Paige led the team with two hits. Dylan Norsen, Blake Hoffman, and Preston Lonadier all had one in the game. The offense was well-rounded Saturday, with five different players driving in one run. Norsen, Lonadier, Hoffman, Paige, and Base all contributed 1 RBI in the Saturday victory. Johnson led the Rangers with two runs, scored followed by Paige Lonadier and Base all with one.

The pitching effort was just as spread-out in the team victory as the offense was. The Rangers would use four pitchers to complete the Saturday win holding Ouachita to only three runs (2ER). Dillon Van Oosbree received the start throwing two innings, allowing two runs on four hits with a strikeout. Austin Thomason relieved Oosbree, throwing five innings allowing 1R (0ER) on four hits while striking out five Tigers' hitters picking up his second win of the season. Grant French would pitch the 8th inning throwing one scoreless frame, striking out one batter. Kaleb Honea closed the game out in the ninth inning for his fifth save of the season in as many save opportunities, with his scoreless inning of work. With Honea's one inning of work, he has not allowed an earned run since February 21st for 13 straight innings and seven straight outings.

The Saturday morning game started similar to game two of the Friday doubleheader, with Ouachita jumping out to the early 2-0 lead following a scoreless first from the Rangers. Tyler Riebock started things for the home team hitting a solo home run to right field to get on the scoreboard. Ouachita would go a little small ball following a single, Schrader would steal second before Louis Steen would single straight up the middle to give the home team a 2-0 lead.

The Rangers had their first hit in the second inning from a Paige single but would not score. Oosbree would escape a jam in the second inning following a triple. The Rangers defense was able to throw out Childers on a throw from White to Page to catch Childers stealing.

The game would remain a 2-0 lead for the Tigers until the fourth inning when the Rangers got on the board. Johnson hit a one-out single to center field before stealing second to set the Rangers up with a runner in scoring position. Hoffman would deliver the RBI single to left field, scoring Johnson to cut the deficit in half at 2-1. Thomason would throw his second straight scoreless inning to keep the shifted momentum on Northwestern's side.

In the fifth inning, the Ranger's offense struck again to even the score at two. The Rangers would then take the turn to play small ball following a Base leadoff single and a sacrifice bunt by Brett Erickson to move him into scoring position, Norsen single to left to knock in Base for an RBI. Marques Paige would push the Rangers in front in the sixth inning for their first lead of the day with a solo home run to center field for his sixth home run on the season.
The pitching settled back in as the Rangers continued to throw six straight scoreless innings before the eighth inning both teams would score. With the Rangers still in the lead, 3-2 looking for some insurance runs. The offense delivered, as Johnson led the 8th inning off with a single before Lonadier would hit him in with an RBI single to center field, knocking Johnson in. Base followed Lonadier's single with an RBI single up the middle putting the Rangers in front 5-2. Ouachita would answer back with a leadoff single followed by a wild pitch putting him in scoring position. Schrader hit a single up the middle as Burris would later score an unearned run on the play following an error.

The Tigers continued to attempt to climb back to tie the game as in the ninth inning would have the tying run in scoring position with runners on second and third one out. However, the Rangers' closer in Honea would then shut the door down with a fly out to right field followed by a strikeout to win the game 5-3 for the save.

The Red-and-Black improved to 10-8 on the season 9-6 in conference play. The Rangers are now on a four-game win streak and move into a tie for fourth place in the conference. The win also makes it nine straight over Ouachita for three straight series sweeps.

Northwestern will be back in action on Tuesday for a mid-week game-playing host to Oklahoma Panhandle State. The Rangers will travel to Bethany, Oklahoma, for their next conference series next week playing Southern Nazarene.
