The Rangers Fall to SWOSU in a Five Set Thriller

WEATHERFORD, Okla. – Northwestern Volleyball fell to the Bulldogs of SWOSU in an electrifying five set contest at the Pioneer Cellular Event Center. 
 
"Both teams fought hard, and it was definitely a battle." Assistant Volleyball Coach Kortney Cunningham explained. 
 
"We are excited about going forward into the playoffs and ready to get back to work." Cunningham added. 
 
The Rangers were defeated 3-2 (23-25, 25-19, 29-27, 18-25, 11-15) after taking Southwestern all the way to five sets during their last match of the regular season. NWOSU moves to 8-5 overall and 5-5 in the Great American Conference. The Bulldogs improve to 6-5 overall and 6-4 in the GAC.

Kate Deterding led Northwestern in the five-set thriller with 23.5 points, 21 kills, 15 digs, two blocks, an assist and a service ace. Deterding posted an impressive .222 hitting percentage off of a 21-5-72 clip. 
 
Kaydee Honeycutt hit .390 on the night with a 20-4-41 clip. Honeycutt racked up four blocks, seven digs, 20 kills, 23 points, a service ace and one assist. 
 
Tarra Parks finished with a double-double of 21 digs and 10 kills. Parks tallied 10.5 points and blocked the Bulldogs once. 
 
Sydnee Miller posted her best defensive performance of the season with 31 digs. Miller also chipped in two service aces and two assists. 
 
Avery Osburg also recorded her best performance of the season after assisting her teammates 53 times, her highest of the season. Osburg finished with a kill, five blocks and 16 digs. 
 
Maggie Peterson earned 15 digs, two aces and a kill. 
 
Ravyn Burns hit .231 in Weatherford and recorded four blocks and five kills. 
 
Madison Dehlinger tallied four digs, one block and three kills.
 
SET 1: (25-23, SW)
The Bulldogs outscored the Rangers by two points in the first set to immediately go up 1-0 in the contest. SWOSU posted a .231 attack percentage after hitting 18-6-52. Southwestern went on a 6-0 scoring run to end the first set. Lacy Mott finished with seven kills to lead the Bulldogs while Deterding led Northwestern with six. The Rangers hit .189% off of a 15-5-53 clip. 

SET 2: (25-19, NW)
Northwestern snagged their first set victory in the second set after forcing nine SWOSU attack errors, their most of the night. The Rangers finished hitting 11-4-34 for .206%, while the Bulldogs posted .049% off of an 11-9-41 clip. NWOSU scored four straight points off of attack errors from Southwestern's Chezney Nielsen. Honeycutt led the Red-and-Black with four kills while Deterding and Parks each chipped in three apiece. Dehlinger was able to seal the Rangers first point after earning the final kill of the set. 
 
SET 3: (29-27, NW)
The Red-and-Black earned back-to-back set victories after going into extra points with the Bulldogs. Honeycutt led the Rangers with six kills, followed by Deterding who finished with four. Burns, Dehlinger, Osburg, Parks and Peterson all chipped in one kill each to contribute to Northwestern's second set win of the night. NWOSU forced SWOSU to give up eight attacking errors and their worst hitting percentage of the night. The Bulldogs hit .18% with a 19-8-61 clip while the Red-and-Black hit 15-5-48 for .208%. 
 
SET 4: (25-18, SW)
Southwestern won the fourth set to earn their second set victory and force the Rangers into a fifth set after hitting 15-3-50 as a team. Northwestern finished the set hitting .154% with a 13-5-52 clip. NWOSU was led by Deterding who recorded seven kills. Emma Cohalla, Taryn Galt and Mott were able to keep SWOSU ahead after each contributing four kills for the Bulldogs. 
 
SET 5: (15-11, SW)
The Rangers fell to Southwestern in the fifth set 11-15. Both teams each posted their best hitting percentages of the night, but the Bulldogs were able to outscore the Red-and-Black in the final set inside the Pioneer Cellular Event Center. Northwestern finished hitting 8-2-26 for .231% while Southwestern hit .333% off of a 12-2-30 clip. Honeycutt finished the set with three kills, Parks chipped in two and Burns, Deterding and Russell all recorded one apiece. Mott led the Bulldogs with five kills and Galt posted three.

Samantha Kuzma posted 13 kills, one block and one dig.
 
Allie Hoang earned three kills, 59 assists, five service aces, three blocks and 23 digs. 
 
Sophia DeSantiago snagged nine assists and 24 digs. 
 
Nielsen recorded nine kills, one block and 19 digs.
 
Galt also finished with nine kills.
 
UP NEXT
The Rangers will compete in their first round of the Great American Conference Championship Tournament. The bracket will be announced at a later date.
