Rangers Power Their Way to a Sweep Over the Bulldogs

ALVA, Okla- The Red-and-Black finished the series against Southwestern on Saturday, completing the three-game sweep over the Bulldogs with a 12-2 win in game one followed by a 20-14 victory in game two. The Rangers would use an eight-run inning to come back in game two, followed by a six-run inning to control the game. The series sweep over the Bulldogs would mark the first time in the division II era for the Rangers. 

The win improves the Rangers record to 25-12 on the season with a 20-10 Great American Conference record. Southwestern falls to 20-15 on the season with a 16-14 GAC record. 

GAME ONE:

The Red-and-Black offense would be led by four different hitters finishing with three hits for 17 in the game. Thomas Beiswanger, Daschal Johnson, Blake Hoffman, and Dylan Norsen would all finish with three hits. The rest of the lineup would end with one hit in the first game for the entire lineup having at least one hit. Norsen would lead the team with 3-RBI in the game, followed by Jake White and Beiswanger with two each. Yugo Hamakawa, Johnson, Marques Paige, Hoffman, and Grant French would finish the game with an RBI. Chase Orrock would finish the game with a hit and a run scored.

Grant French would take the ball for game one of the doubleheader starts throwing 4.1IP, allowing two runs on five hits while striking out three. Austin Thomason would come into the game throwing in relief 2.2 innings of work, allowing just one hit, with no runs, allowed striking out two while earning his third win of the season.

French would set the tone early on for the Rangers, retiring the first three Bulldog hitters he would face striking out two of the three.

Northwestern's offense would strike first in the opening inning following a leadoff single from Beiswanger; Johnson would rope an RBI double into the left-center gap to bring Beiswanger home for the 1-0 Rangers lead.

After a scoreless top half of the frame in the second inning, the Rangers would add more runs opening a 3-0 lead. Norsen got things started with a single into left. White followed him with an RBI double down the left-field line for the RBI. The Rangers would turn to the top of the order in Beiswanger, who delivered an RBI single up the middle scoring White.

The rival Bulldogs would jump on the board in the third inning following a single Miguel Soto would deliver a 2-run home run to left field to cut the Rangers lead down to 3-2.

The Red-and-Black bats were ready to answer back in the third inning with three runs through the inning. Johnson would deliver a double for one of his three hits on the day before Paige would follow with an RBI single through the left side, putting the Rangers in front 4-2. With runners on second and third following a wild pitch, Norsen would deliver a 2-RBI single into left-center field, pushing the Rangers in front 6-2.

The Rangers pitching would settle in after the third, not allowing another run through the game. The score would stay 6-2 until the fifth inning following Thomason coming in to pitch, escaping a jam; the offense would carry the momentum.

In the home half of the fifth inning, Northwestern would add three more runs in the inning. French would step to the plate with runners on first and second, platting another run with an RBI single to right field. Norsen would follow with back-to-back RBI singles for the Rangers, this one to left field scoring Hoffman. White would deliver the final run of the inning on a sacrifice fly to right field for a 9-2 Rangers lead after five innings.

Thomason would throw a scoreless sixth inning before the Rangers would take advantage of a Southwestern error by Hoffman hitting an RBI single into right-center field, scoring Hamakawa for a 10-2 lead.

Thomason would complete the scoreless inning for the Rangers. Orrock would hit an RBI single into left field. Beiswanger would then hit an RBI double to left-center field, bringing home Orrock. Hamakawa would then deliver an RBI single into left field to complete the win for the Rangers 12-2 in seven innings.


GAME TWO:

Ethan Swanson would receive the game two start for the Rangers throwing 3.2 innings, allowing seven runs on seven hits. Colby Carlson would relieve Swanson, followed by Emilio Lovato throwing 2.1 innings, allowing three runs while picking up his second win of the season. Dillon Van Oosbree would come in and throw a scoreless inning in the seventh. 

The Rangers offense would power their way through this game with seven home runs in the game. The offense would conclude the game with 20 runs on 17 hits. Blake Hoffman led the team with four hits in game two followed by Chase Orrock and Yugo Hamakawa with three each. Marques Paige and Dylan Norsen would have two, while Daschal Johnson Thomas Beiswanger, and Jake White each finished with one. Orrock led the team with five RBI in the game followed by Hoffman with four. Hamakawa and Norsen each finished with three, Beiswanger and Paige had two followed by Johnson with one. Orrock also led the team in runs scored. Grant French would reach base on two walks scoring both times. 

In the opening inning, the Rangers would work around a leadoff walk and a stolen base to hold the game at 0-0, with Noah Chapin following by striking out the side in the first inning.

Zach Baxley would hit a solo home ending Swanson's 12 consecutive scoreless inning streak. The Rangers would respond right away, though in the second inning. Paige would reach first on a dropped third strike. Hoffman would then follow with a 2-run home run to center field. Norsen would draw a two-out walk which Orrock would follow with a 2-run home run to left-center field, giving the Rangers a 4-1 lead through the first two innings.

Southwestern would answer back, though, with a single and a walk to start the inning before Miguel Soto would get even the score in one swing with a three-run home run bringing the score to 4-4. 

Johnson would hit a one-out single throughout the left side to set up Paige. Paige would blast a 2-run home run to left field for the team's third of the game, pushing the Rangers back in front at 6-4. 

The Bulldogs would explode in the fourth, though, with a seven-run inning to take back the lead. There was a runner on first Alex Bedard doubled to right center bringing home a run. Soto would tie the game with an RBI single to left field, continuing the Bulldogs' two-out rally. Zach Baxley would deliver a 3-run home run for the Bulldogs putting them in front 9-6. The Bulldogs would hit one more home run in the inning for an 11-6 SWOSU lead. 

The Red-and-Black was set to battle right back with an eight-run fourth inning to regain the lead right back. Orrock would lead things off with a single before Beiswanger would deliver a 2-run home run to bring the Rangers back within three runs. Hamakawa would follow with a solo home run going back-to-back with Beiswanger. Hoffman would provide a 2-run home run of his own. A Norsen RBI single would tie the game at 11. Orrock would then blast a three-run home run for his second home run of the game, pushing the Rangers back in front at 14-11. 

The scoring would continue in the fifth as Alex Bedard would hit a solo home run to the right field to cut the Rangers lead back down to 14-12. 

The game would stay 14-12 into the bottom of the sixth inning before the Rangers would add six runs in the inning, first when Norsen blasted a two-run home run giving the Rangers a 16-12 lead. The bases were loaded for Hamakawa as he delivered a 2-RBI double into the right-field gap bringing the Rangers to lead 18-12. Johnson would follow with a sacrifice fly to center field, bringing the game to 19-12. Hoffman would deliver the final run of the game for the Rangers with an RBI single scoring Hamakawa. 

The Bulldogs would hit two- solo home runs in the seventh inning, cutting their deficit to 20-12, but Van Oosbree would hold the damage there, pitching a scoreless inning to complete the Rangers sweep with a 20-14 victory over the Bulldogs. 

The Rangers will close the regular season next week with a three-game series against Southern Arkansas here in Glass Family Field at Myers Stadium.
