Rangers Return Home With a Win Over the Reddies Thursday Night

ALVA, OKLA- Northwestern Oklahoma State Rangers returned to action Thursday evening with a 76-66 win over Henderson State. The Rangers used a strong performance from behind the arc shooting 40.9% from three helping lead the Rangers to the 10 point victory.

The win improves the Rangers to 8-4 overall with a 3-3 conference record on the season, as the loss drops Henderson State to 7-5 with a 3-3 conference record.

Northwestern was led in scoring by Bubba Furlong with 22 points on the night as one of three players in double figures for the Rangers. He was followed by Brian Free with 13 points and Anthony Jones with 11 on the night. Larry White led the team in rebounding with 10 followed by Furlong with nine. The Red-and-Black were led in assists with three players each finishing with three on the evening in Ravel Moody, Brain Free, Bubba Furlong.

Free opened the game scoring off the opening tip-off as the Rangers won position, with the Ranger guard knocking down a three-pointer to start the game and give Northwestern their first lead of the game. Furlong would follow with a dunk pushing the Ranger lead to 5-0 through the first two minutes as the Rangers held the Reddies scoreless. Henderson State got their first jumper with 17:12 left in the half. The Rangers held a 10-4 scoring advantage at the opening media time out of the game.

A White dunk would push the Rangers to their largest lead at that point in the game with 10 minutes left in the opening half as Northwestern went up to 18-10. Henderson tried to make a push midway through the half scoring five straight to cut the Ranger lead to 18-10 but a Parsons layup silenced the run putting the Rangers back up five.

Henderson cut their deficit to two at 22-20 before a Jones three put the lead back to five. This would spark a 12-2 Ranger advantage pushing the Ranger lead to 12 at 34-22. Jones and Furlong led the way with nine of the 12 points on the run. The Ranger defense held the Reddies to 0-6 shooting in that span. Two late Henderson foul shots would cut their deficit to under 10 going into halftime.

The Rangers lead 39-30 at the break led by 10 Furlong points at the break.

Furlong opened the second half with a three-pointer, his second of the game to quickly put the Rangers back in front by double digits, holding a 42-30 lead. The game would hit a stalemate to that point as the two teams would go the next two minutes without a basket before a Reddie layup cut it to 10. A Furlong three with 16 minutes left in the game pushed the Rangers lead out to 13 at 47-34 giving him 18 to that point. Northwestern held a 48-36 lead at the first media timeout in the second half.

Northwestern kept on pressuring the Reddies forcing 17 turnovers including one leading to a Ravel Moody three-pointer giving them their largest lead at 15 with 14 minutes to play in the game.

Henderson used a 7-0 run to cut their deficit back under 10 at eight points at 53-45 before the Rangers would silence yet another comeback bid on a Moody three-pointer just under the 10-minute mark giving the Rangers a 59-48 cushion. Northwestern would continue to hold the 11 point lead as the teams traded baskets. With just over two minutes remaining in the game, two Free foul shots would push the Ranger lead back to 14. In the final minute, Henderson State was able to cut it back just under 10 at 72-64 but Northwestern quickly put that comeback try away. Jones' foul shots would put the finishing touches on the game giving Northwestern the 76-66 victory over Henderson State.

Northwestern will be back in action Saturday afternoon continuing conference play with a game against Ouachita Baptist. Tip-off is scheduled for 3:00 PM following the Lady Rangers game.
