ALVA, OKLAHOMA - The Ranger baseball team closed out their three game series against Arkansas Tech splitting the Saturday doubleheader but winning the overall series this weekend. In game one the Rangers jumped out early with three runs in the first before winning 19-3. The Wonder Boys responded with eight quick runs in game two before closing out 21-5 win taking the final game.
GAME ONE:Â
The Rangers jumped out fast in the second game of the series with three runs in the opening inning. Lovato used a double play to help get out of the first inning. Erickson led the bottom half of the inning off with a single before Blake Hoffman hit him home with a 2-run home run to take a 2-0 lead. Shaughn Kelly then went back-to-back with Hoffman to extend the lead to 3-0 over the Wonder Boys.
Arkansas Tech however was ready to respond back as they scored two runs in the top of the second inning. Leadoff hitter was hit by the pitch to start things for the Wonder Boys.Hafley then homered to put Arkansas Tech on the board to cut the deficit to 3-2. Northwestern was held scoreless after having two runners reach safely.Â
The third inning the Wonder Boys went down without a run as the Rangers were able to extend their lead. Chase Orrock got things started with a single in the third inning opening a nine run inning. After the Orrock single he was followed by two straight singles both driving in one run by Kelly, then Priest with the second one for a 5-2 Ranger lead. Brayden Koenig singled in the next run for a 6-2 lead. Bryan Guerrero then stepped up with the bases loaded, drawing a walk forcing in the seventh run. Brett Erickson then followed with a single to left field to give the Rangers an 8-2 lead.Â
Hamakawa continued the rally with an RBI single before Erickson then scored on a wild pitch to take a 10-2 lead. The ninth and final run of the inning was scored on a sacrifice fly to center field to push the lead to nine runs through three innings.Â
The Ranger offense continued to add runs adding another run in the fourth after Koenig singled and stole and Erickson drove him in with an RBI single. Northwestern was not ready to end there though as in the fifth Kelly, Priest, and Norsen all reached base on a walk followed by two singles before a Bryan Guerrero double pushed the Ranger lead to 15-2 through the fifth inning.Â
After Arkansas Tech was retired in order Northwestern tacked on two more runs after Garrett Crone walked, Blake Hoffman drove him in with a 2-run home run to right center for a 17-2 lead.Â
The Wonder Boys got one run back in the seventh on a solo home run but the Rangers closed out the 19-3 win to take game one and the series win.Â
GAME TWO:
Arkansas Tech jumped out early after back to back doubles to take an early lead. Hafley later extended their lead to 3-0 with a 2-RBI single. Rangers went down in order as the game remained 3-0 through the first. In the second inning two singles and a walk loaded the bases before Quiggins was hit by a pitch pushing in the fourth run. Hafley followed with an RBI single to take a 6-0 lead. Ray singled to center field as the lead was pushed to 8-0. Blake Hoffman responded for the Rangers in the bottom half of the inning with a solo home run but that was all the Rangers could score in the inning as they trailed 8-1 through two innings.Â
The Wonder Boy offense continued to power through as a Quiggins three run home run scored Detweiler and Medina as the lead grew to 11-1. Northwestern in the bottom half of the inning had their second solo home run this time off the bat of Yugo Hamakawa trailing 11-2 through three innings.Â
After a scoreless fourth inning both teams jumped back on the board in the fifth. Medina hit a solo home run to extend the lead back to 12-2. THe inning did not stop there though as Detweiler singled followed by a Quiggins home run pushing the lead to 14-2. Hamakawa hit his second solo home run of the game as the deficit went down to 14-3 through five innings.Â
Arkansas Tech added a six spot in the sixth inning as after two hit by batters the bases were loaded for a Maddux two-RBI single to push the visitors lead to 16-3. Detweiler then singled home two runs before an error allowed the third run to come around and score.Â
With the Rangers trailing 20-5 Joseph Frisby blasted a two run home run to cut the deficit to 20-5 through six innings.Â
Arkansas Tech closed out the 21-5 win after a fielder's choice scored the final run of the game. Northwestern had one base runner in the seventh left on base.Â
The Rangers will play their final home game of the season on Tuesday against Rogers State before hitting the road to Weatherford for the final series of the season in the regular season.
