Northwestern Wins Thriller Over Oklahoma Baptist

ALVA, OKLAHOMA - Northwestern Oklahoma State bounced back Saturday afternoon with a win over Oklahoma Baptist. After a back-and-forth game the Rangers closed out the eight point win. Northwestern used a 7-0 run to extend a two point lead to go up 59-50 and never lost control from them leading the rest of the way.

The Win improves the Rangers to 7-7 on the season with a 3-7 conference record. 

Malik Parsons led the Rangers with 36 points in the win as one of four players in double figures. Shavaul Butters finished with 15 points and nine rebounds Brian Free finished with 14 points followed by Jason Douglas-Stanley with 13.

FIRST HALF:

Northwestern opened the scoring on a dunk by Larry White assisted by Parsons. Shavaul Butters followed that possession with a put back dunk off a miss from Parsons putting the Rangers up 4-0. Oklahoma Baptist countered with a 6-0 run to bring the game back within one point at 9-8. Butters had his second put back dunk in the opening minutes of the game out of the media timeout taking an 11-8 lead. Love continued to get a good start for the Rangers off a steal from Kennedy Milton Chance Love threw down a fastbreak dunk. Oklahoma Baptist later tied the game at 16-16 before taking a 23-18 with 12 minutes left in the first half. 

Oklahoma Baptist extended their lead to eight at 29-21 but the Rangers answered back. Northwestern cut it to four at 29-25 following foul shots by Butters before a Love layup for a 29-25 deficit. Brian Free knocked down back to back three pointers to take a 35-34 lead with 4:48 left to play in the half. The Bison responded by going on a 6-0 run to regain the lead before extending their lead to six at 42-36. Jason Douglas Standley knocked down two late three pointers with 16 seconds left in the half to trail 44-42 at the break.

SECOND HALF:

A minute and a half into the second Kennedy Milton tied the game with a layup with a score of 44-44. Parsons gave the Rangers the lead once again with 18:01 left in the half off a fastbreak layup following a steal. He completed the three point play to take a 47-44 lead. Oklahoma Baptist responded but Northwestern answered back holding three points at 52-49. Northwestern then went on a seven to zero run started by a dunk by Chance Love as the Rangers grew their lead to nine points at 59-50 with 13:58 remaining in the game. 

Oklahoma Baptist tried answering with a three but Jason Douglas-Stanley answered with one back of his own. The lead was cut to four once again at 66-62 with 10:11 left in the game. Parsons answered back with a dunk following a Free rebound. Northwestern extended the lead to double digits on a foul shot from Parsons at 74-64. Northwestern held the double digit lead all the way to the five minute mark before a three from Ricky Brown brought it to 81-73. Northwestern answered Oklahoma Baptist runs each time as the Bison brought the game back down to five at 85-80 but Milton hit a foul shot starting another Ranger run as Northwestern took an 91-83 lead. 

The Rangers closed out the eight point lead at the foul line as Parsons closed it with two foul shots to take a 96-87 lead. Oklahoma Baptist got one last foul shot to make the final score 96-88. 

Northwestern snapped their two game losing streak with the win. The Rangers will be back in action on Monday as the Red-and-Black travel to Weatherford for the rivalry matchup with Southwestern.
