ALVA, OKLAHOMA - The Lady Rangers retrieve another conference win making their record 7-3 and conference record 3-3 after a great win against Monticello. This 59-52 victory over the Blossoms began with a slow start of 22 points in the first half before scoring 22 points alone in the third quarter to help open a double digit lead over Arkansas Monticello at the end of the third quarter.
The Lady Rangers leading scorers were Camille Thomas and Nikya Orange as they both obtained a double-double this game. Thomas secured 26 points and 11 rebounds while shooting 100% from the free throw line. Orange scored a total of 15 points and had 11 rebounds. Carly Craig and Nikya Orange finished with three steals each leading the Lady Ranger defense to force 19 turnovers in the win.
First Quarter:
The beginning of the game started off a little rocky with 2 turnovers before completing their first field goal, a three-pointer made by Carly Craig. Thomas then was able to bring the Lady Rangers to a 5-0 run with a layup. Arkansas Monticello went on a 5-0 run capitalizing on a Lady Ranger turnover to catch up 5-5. Thomas began her great run from the foul line in the middle of the first quarter as she scored 4-4 from the line and ended the quarter with 8 of the 14 points made by the Lady Rangers.
Second Quarter:
Just like their last game against the Muleriders, the Lady Rangers opened the second quarter on a 6-0 run from leading scorers Orange and Thomas bringing them to a 20-14 lead. The Lady Rangers then followed up with a couple of turnovers causing Arkansas Monticello to comeback and tie the game at 22-22. The Lady Rangers did not score again throughout the rest of the quarter, and the Blossoms earned three more points to end the first half with a score of 25-22 in favor of Arkansas Monticello.
Third Quarter:
Entering the second half of the game, Camille Thomas scored the Lady Rangers first two baskets by the 7:33 mark in the third quarter. The team was still trailing by one with a score of 27-26 until the Lady Rangers had two opportunities to get some free throws and went on a 4-0 run from the line. Thomas scored two of these free throws bringing her to 16 points by the middle of the third quarter. As the score was 30-27 at the 6:19 mark, the Lady Rangers scored 14 more points forcing the Blossoms into foul trouble while taking advantage. The team was 8-9 from the free throw line and shot 7-13 from the field ending the third quarter scoring 22 points and taking a double digit lead into the fourth quarter 44-34 !
Fourth Quarter:
The last quarter of the game began with a three-pointer completed by Carly Craig just 26 seconds after the quarter ended. Monticello proceeded to get a three off directly after Northwestern to answer, yet the Lady Rangers still led by ten with a score of 47-37 keeping Arkansas Montiello at length. In the quarter the Lady Ranger defense continued to force problem for the Blossom offense. Northwestern forced 19 turnovers behind three steals each from Craig and Orange.
The Lady Rangers will be on the road next week as they travel to Arkadelphia, Arkansas to play against the Henderson State Reddies on January 12th. Tipoff is at 5:30pm for their seventh conference game of the season.
