ALVA, OKLAHOMA - Northwestern Oklahoma State concluded their two game home stand finishing off with Arkansas Tech. The Rangers won the match 3-1, after jumping out early with a 25-14 set victory.
The win improves the Rangers to 8-12 on the season 4-5 in the Great American Conference. Arkansas Tech falls 1-18, 1-8 GAC.
Northwestern was led by Erika Asencio Soriano with 20 kills a game high followed by Macy Shreffler with 14. Abby Davis finished with a game high 44 assists and Brianda Diaz with 16 digs.
SET ONE:
Arkansas Tech jumped on the board first with a kill by Kaitlyn Neal assisted by Jamie Myrick. Northwestern answered back with two points started by Asencio Soriano taking a 2-1 lead. After Arkansas Tech tied it at 2-2 Northwestern went on a 6-0 run started by an Arkansas Tech error. Macy Shreffler finished off a strong kill followed by a Brianda Diaz service ace as the Rangers led 8-2. With the Rangers leading 9-5 Shreffler and Jimenez finished off back to back kills taking an 11-5 lead before an Arkansas Tech error made it 12-5. After two quick points by the Golden Suns the Rangers went on another run this time started by Asencio Soriano with a kill taking a 13-7 lead. Carmae Jones and Mariela Jimenez blocked Tech as the Rangers opened a 16-7 lead. Northwestern was able to extend their lead to double digits following an Arkansas Tech error and a kill by Jimenez taking a 20-10 lead. The Rangers closed out the set with a double digit win at 25-14 over the Golden Suns.
SET TWO:
The Golden Suns once again went on the board first with a kill by Sierra Orton for a 1-0 lead. Carmae Jones answered the evening's set. The Golden Suns went on a 3-0 run following two blocks and a Ranger error. Arkansas Tech then extended their lead to 10-5 after an error and a service ace. Northwestern scored five straight from there tying the set back at 10. Macy Shreffler and Ivanny Blackwood started the run with kills before a Macy Shreffler service ace. Arkansas Tech answered though with a 6-1 run taking a 16-11 lead over the Rangers. With the Rangers trailing 18-13 Carmae Jones tried to help bring the Rangers back starting a 3-0 run as the Rangers trailed 18-15. The two teams began trading point for point after the deficit stayed at three at 21-18 before Arkansas Tech closed out the set win at 25-19 to even the match at 1-1.
SET THREE:
Arkansas Tech for the third straight set scored the first point this time the first two before Shreffler and Asencio Soriano had back to back kills to tie the set. Arkansas Tech answered with two straight for a 4-2 lead. Northwestern then answered with four straight taking their first lead of the set after a service ace by Diaz and two kills by Jimenez. Shreffler then went off for three straight kills taking a 9-5 lead over the Golden Suns. Arkansas Tech answered back though to tie the set at 13-13. Blackwood answered with a kill taking a 14-13 lead for the Rangers. Northwestern maintained the lead taking a 19-16 lead following a kill by Shreffler.Arkansas Tech got back within as close as one at 19-18 but Jimenez made sure that was as close as they would get finishing a kill before helping the Rangers get the last three points for a 25-22 set victory and a 2-1 match lead.
SET FOUR:
The Rangers started the fourth set with the first point of the set following a bad serve. Arkansas Tech answered though with five of the next six points taking a 5-2 lead over the Rangers on a kill by Meyer and a service ace from Grier. Northwestern would fight back though with two straight kills before back to back blocks by Jimenez evening the score at 6-6 and gaining the momentum. The run continued following a kill by Asencio Soriano and a Shreffler service ace as the Rangers led 8-6. Arkansas Tech evened the set at 11-11 before taking a 13-11 lead. Arkansas Tech opened an 18-14 lead over the Rangers as the deficit stayed at four at 20-16 the Rangers got two straight points to make it 20-18 before a 21-18 deficit. Shreffler started a 5-0 run for the Rangers which was continued by Erika Asencio Soriano taking over with a block and two kills to take a 23-21 lead. After Arkansas Tech took a 24-23 a Ranger timeout changed the pace of the set as a service error tied the set before a kill by Soriano led to Jones and Blackwood getting a block to seal the Ranger victory. Northwestern scored the last three points of the set for a 26-24 victory and a 3-1 match win.
Northwestern will next be on the road at Southern Arkansas in Magnolia followed by a match at Arkansas Monticello for a two game trip to Arkansas.
