ALVA, OKLAHOMA - The Ranger Volleyball team went against Langston University on Tuesday evening. Northwestern took the first set before taking the last two in controlling fashion.
Northwestern improves to 7-9 on the season after the nonconference victory while Langston drops to 1-16. The Rangers were led by Erika Asencio Soriano finishing with 12 kills, Cameron Lobb 25 assists and Brianda Diaz 14 digs.
SET ONE:
Langston and the Rangers came out of the start even after Ivanny Blackwood started the match with a kill the two teams went back and forth for the first 10 points as it was locked at 5-5 through the first 10. Langston grabbed the next three points to take a 7-5 lead over the Rangers. Northwestern would climb back with four straight points started by a kill from Cameron Lobb to take a 12-10 lead finished by a block by Carmae Jones. The Lions battled back to tie the set at 13-13. After Langston took a 16-14 lead Northwestern turned the momentum. A kill by Mariela Jimenez started things off assisted by Lobb before a kill by Mikayla White and two Lion errors had the Rangers up 18-16. After it was tied at 18-18 a block by Jimenez and Macy Shreffler put the Rangers back in front. Northwestern closed the set on a 5-0 run started by a Jimenez kill. A Jimenez service ace closed out the set victory 25-19 as the Rangers led the match 1-0.
SET TWO:
Lobb started the second set with back-to-back service aces followed by a Asencio Soriano kill to take an early 3-0 lead over the Lions. Northwestern maintained the large lead after the Lions cut it to 4-3. Ece Ozdemir started a Ranger run with a kill followed by Blackwood and Jimenez had the Rangers up 8-4. As the Rangers continued to pull away from the Lions as four straight points put the Rangers in the lead 13-6. Blackwood followed with two aggressive kills and a service ace by Abby Davis as Northwestern opened a 20-11 lead. The lead grew to double digits following a kill by Ozdemir. This started a 5-1 run as the Rangers closed out the set 25-13. Jimenez, Shreffler and Asencio Soriano each had kills during the run. The set win put the Rangers in front 2-0 overall in the match.
SET THREE:
The Lions grabbed the first point of the set following an attack error by the Rangers. Asencio Soriano tied the set with a kill at 1-1. With it tied 2-2 back to back kills by Blackwood gave the Rangers their first lead of the set. This was followed by a Brianda Diaz service ace and two straight kills by Ece Ozdemir. This put the Rangers in front 6-2. After two straight points from Langston following a kill by Lauren Collier, the Rangers answered with powering kills by Shreffler and Ozdemir. Abby Davis following two assists on the latest kills earned a service ace which opened a 13-4 lead for Northwestern. The lead grew to double digits at 15-5 following a kill by Jimenez. The Rangers continued this lead as a kill by Carmae Jones and a service ace by Shreffler put the lead to 20-8. Northwestern closed out the set and match win with a 25-15 victory finished off by Ece Ozdemir.
Northwestern will travel on the road for their next two matches as the team travels to Arkadelphia Arkansas for a match against Henderson State and Ouachita Baptist.
