ALVA, OKLAHOMA - Northwestern Oklahoma State returned home for one of two final home games. The Rangers jumped out to a 2-1 match lead after a set three victory but the Crimson Storm fired back to take the match 3-2 over the Rangers.
The Rangers fall to 9-15 on the season with a 5-8 conference record while the Crimson Storm improve to 15-12 with a 5-8 season.
Erika Asencio Soriano finished with a team high 14 kills followed by Macy Shreffler with 12, Ivanny Blackwood had four blocks for a team high. Abby Davis had a team high 23 assists.
SET ONE:
Southern Nazarene rattled off the first point of the match on a kill by Sunny Batschelett. Ivanny Blackwood got the scoring started for the Rangers finishing off a kill from Cameron Lobb. After the Rangers trailed 3-2 before a block by Mariela Jimenez fired off three straight points to take a 5-3 lead. Asencio Soriano and Carmae Jones had back to back kills to keep their three point lead at 8-5. Blackwood sent one through the Crimson Storm defense for a 10-7 lead. With the Rangers leading 13-12, Northwestern extended their lead to 19-13 following a 6-1 run for the Rangers closed off by a Lobb service ace. As Northwestern held a 20-15 lead Southern Nazarene went on a 5-0 run with two kills and two blocks to cut their deficit down to 20-19. The Crimson Storm grabbed the lead back following three straight to take a 22-21 lead, and the set was finished off by back to back kills from Tynaa Mojica. Southern Nazarene won the set 25-23 for a match lead of 1-0.
SET TWO:
The Crimson Storm started off with two straight points on a service ace and a block by Sunny Batschelett for a 2-0 lead. Northwestern wasted no time coming back with three straight which was started on a kill by Macy Shreffler, finished off by a service ace by Abby Davis. Southern Nazarene stole the lead following three straight points. As the Crimson Storm led 7-5 over the Rangers. Northwestern jumped on a 6-0 run as Ece Ozdemir started the run followed by blocks on the three of next four points as the Rangers went out to a 11-7 lead. Southern Nazarene was right there to answer back with four straight to even the score at 11-11. The Rangers fired back with six straight points starting from a service error. Northwestern then led 17-11. The Rangers protected the lead from there not losing it as each Storm run the Rangers were able to answer back holding on to the lead. The Rangers finished the set with a 25-21 victory over the Crimson Storm as Northwestern was able to even the match at 1-1 through the first two.
SET THREE:
The Crimson Storm had the first point of the set for the third straight set as a kill by Batschelett had the Storm up 1-0. Jimenez started the scoring for the Rangers before Northwestern jumped out to a 5-3 lead following three straight points. Carmae Jones and Ivanny Blackwood kept the momentum for Northwestern with a block for a 4-1 run as Northwestern led 9-6. Northwestern pushed the lead to five following a kill by Jimenez as the Rangers led 13-8. Southern Nazarene tried to push a comeback again with four straight points cutting the Ranger lead to 14-13. The Rangers again answered back with five straight points. Asencio Sorinao ended the Crimson Storm run before a service ace kept the Rangers in business. Northwestern extended the lead to 19-13. Southern Nazarene got within two at 20-18 but Northwestern did not allow them to grab the lead as a 3-0 run started by an attack error helped the Rangers push the lead to 24-19 before closing out a 25-20 victory for a 2-1 match lead.
SET FOUR:
Southern Nazarene got off to their best start of the match with a 4-1 lead following a point in the opening rally before a kill by Batschelett gave them the three point lead. Southern Nazarene though gave up the lead as the Rangers stormed back for a 4-0 run taking a 5-4 lead following back to back service aces. The set stayed tied until 6-6 before Southern Nazarene went for four straight points for a 10-6 lead after few attack errors. Crimson Storm extended their lead to six holding a 13-7 lead. The teams then went back and forth trading points to 16-11 in favor of the visitors. Northwestern came back following a 4-0 run started by a kill from Jimenez and closed off by a service ace from Shreffler. Northwestern was not able to even the set as it got as close as one at 20-19 following a kill by Shreffler. Southern Nazarene closed the set though on a 5-1 run as they were able to take set four 25-20 to even the match overall 2-2.
SET FIVE:
In the fifth and final set Southern Nazarene jumped out to a 2-0 lead. After the Rangers got on the board from a service error. The Crimson Storm answered with four straight points to open a 6-1 lead following three kills and a service ace. Shreffler had a kill to cut the deficit to four before Northwestern went on a 4-0 run trailing 8-6 to cut the deficit down to two. Southern Nazarene did not allow the Rangers to get the lead though, answering with a 5-1 run taking a 14-8 lead overall. A kill by Whitney Bowie won the set and match for the Crimson Storm with a 15-9 set five win and a 3-2 match lead.
Northwestern will have their final home game of the season on Thursday against East Central for Senior Night. The start time is scheduled for 6:00 PM.
