ARKADELPHIA, ARKANSAS - The Rangers closed out a two game trip to Arkadelphia, this one against Ouachita Baptist. The Tigers jumped out early for a first set win 25-14 before closing out the match 3-1 over the Rangers.
The loss drops the Rangers to 7-11 on the season with a 3-4 conference record while Ouachita Baptist is now 11-11 on the season with a 3-4 conference record.
Erika Asencio Soriano finished with 14 kills followed by Macy Shreffler with nine. Cameron Lobb finished with 24 assists, and Brianda Diaz with 19 digs. Mariela Jimenez had four blocks for a game high.
SET ONE:
Ouachita Baptist jumped out with back to back kills both by Leah Gardner. A service error put the Rangers on the board followed by a kill from Ivanny Blackwood. With Ouachita in the lead 3-2 a kill by Emily Adams started a 6-0 run opening a 9-2 lead over the Rangers. Northwestern tried to answer back with three straight points started by a kill from Jimenez and then a block by Ozge Yavuz and Jimenez cut it to 9-5. Ouachita Baptist answered back though taking their lead back to 13-6. Northwestern would get as close as three at 15-12 following a kill by Asencio Soriano. With the score 15-12 Ouachita then went on an 8-0 run with three kills and two service aces had the Tigers in a 23-12 lead over Ouachita. The home team finished off set one with a 25-14 victory in the opening set taking a 1-0 match lead.Â
SET TWO:Â
Ouachita kept the momentum to start the second set opening with three of the first four points. Northwestern got back in the set tying the set at 8-8 following back to back kills by Asencio Soriano. Ouachita answered with two straight but then the Rangers took their first lead after three straight points started by a kill from Ece Ozdemir and Macy Shreffler before a service ace. Northwestern found a way to take control of the second set after trailing 13-12 a kill by Ozdemir and Shreffler put the Rangers back in front. Jimenez closed off the 4-0 run giving the Rangers a 16-13 set lead. Northwestern continued to put pressure on the home team with three more straight points taking a 19-14 lead. The lead grew to 22-16. Northwestern finished off the set with back to back points as Shreffler finished off a kill before a service ace closed out the 25-18 win to even the match at 1-1.Â
SET THREE:Â
The Tigers jumped right back as they opened the third set with the first three points on two kills and a block. An attack error put the Rangers on the board but Ouachita answered with four straight points for a 7-1 lead. Ouachita again answered a Ranger point from a Jimenez kill for four more straight points and an 11-2 lead. The lead grew to 15-4 for an 11 point difference. The Tigers maintained the double digit lead to 20-10. A kill by Ascencio Soriano was the first of three straight points to cut the deficit to seven. The Tigers closed out the set with a 25-16 lead over the Rangers and a 2-1 match lead.Â
SET FOUR:
After the Tigers scored the first point of the fourth set the Rangers answered back with four straight to take a 5-3 finish off a block by Macy Shreffler..Ouachita climbed back though for five of the next six points regaining the lead at 10-6. With an 11-8 lead the Tigers opened the set up with a 7-0 run started by a kill including three straight to take a 17-8 lead over the Rangers. Ouachita grew their lead to 20-10 and eventually four more straight points for a 24-10 lead before closing out the set and match with a 25-12 victory and 3-1 overall in the match.Â
Northwestern comes home for two straight home matches starting on Thursday evening against Harding at 6:00 PM before hosting Arkansas Tech Friday afternoon.
