Rangers Swept in Season Finale

WEATHERFORD, OKLAHOMA - The Rangers traveled to Weatherford for the rivalry matchup against Southwestern. The Bulldogs got off to a fast start after three close sets and completed a 3-0 sweep over the Rangers.

Northwestern was led by Macy Shreffler with 10 kills, followed by Erika Asencio Soriano and Ivanny Blackwood with eight kills. Cameron Lobb led with 16 assists followed by Abby Davis with 15. Brianda Diaz led with 14 digs in the match. 

SET ONE:

Southwestern struck first with a kill from Samantha Kuzma before Ivanny Blackwood had the first kill for the Rangers followed by one from Shreffler. The set was locked at 3-3 when Erika Asencio Soriano had her first kill of the set, pushing the Rangers back in front. After a Carmae Jones kill and a Bulldog error had the Rangers in front 6-4. The Bulldogs came back to even the score at 6-6 before the Rangers regained the lead stretching the lead to 10-7 following a kill by Blackwood forcing the Bulldogs into a timeout. Southwestern stormed back after the timeout started by a kill from Maicee Morgan as they tied the set at 12-12 before a service ace pushed them back in front 13-12. Southwestern forced the Rangers into a timeout after back to back kills, one from Hailey Smith, to take a 15-13 lead. Northwestern had three of the next four points to tie the set at 16-16. This was started by Asencio Soriano followed by a black from Ozge Yavuz and a kill from Yavuz had the set tied at 16-16. The two teams went back and forth trading points as it was tied 18-18 before Southwestern had a service ace taking a 20-18 lead as the Rangers called their second timeout. Mariela Jimenez had a big block pushing the Rangers back within one, and after a Southwestern error the set was tied at 22-22. Southwestern followed with two straight kills and a Rangers error as the home team held on for a set one victory, taking a 1-0 match lead. 

SET TWO: 

The Bulldogs opened the second set with the first two points following two Ranger errors, before a Bulldogs error put the Rangers on the board in set two. Macy Shreffler followed with a kill to cut the deficit to 3-2 but the Bulldogs continued to answer each Rangers point. Southwestern took a 5-2 lead. Northwestern got back within one following a kill by Ascencio Soriano and a service ace from Cameron Lobb as the Bulldogs led 7-6. Southwestern took an 11-7 lead following a kill by Taryn Galt as the Rangers called a timeout down by four. Out of the timeout Southwestern continued to extend their lead in the second set following a service ace and a kill the Bulldogs led 13-9. Southwestern then followed with five of the next six points taking a 18-11 lead as the Rangers used their second timeout. Northwestern out of the timeout scored two straight points after a kill by Ascencio Soriano and Yavuz. The Rangers continued to climb back into the set with three of the next four points on kills by Shreffler and Jimenez. A block by Carmae Jones and Jimenez cut the deficit to three as Southwestern called a timeout. Southwestern scored the first two points out of the timeout taking a 24-19 lead. Southwestern closed out the set victory 25-20 over the Rangers taking a 2-0 match lead. 

SET THREE:

The third set Northwestern started early with two straight points following a Southwestern error and a kill by Carmae Jones. However the Bulldogs responded with three straight points taking a 3-2 lead. The set was locked at 4-4 as the teams went back and forth, neither team able to gain any breathing room going point for point as a kill by Shreffler and Blackwood had it tied at 8-8. After the kill though Southwestern had three straight of their own taking an 11-8 lead the largest lead in the third set. The Rangers though brought it back within one with two straight points from Jimenez first off a kill assisted by Abby Davis followed by a block by Carmae Jones. Northwestern used a timeout following two straight from Southwestern as they pushed the lead back to 14-11. The Bulldogs continued their run extending the lead to 17-11 continuing the 5-0 run. Asencio Soriano had two straight kills and a kill by Yavuz bringing the set back within three as it went to 17-14 in favor of the Bulldogs. Southwestern out of the timeout went with back to back kills for a 19-14 lead before the Rangers went on another run started by service error. Shreffler and Yavuz had back to back kills. Soriano followed with a service ace bringing it back to one at 19-18. After Southwestern extended the lead back to 21-18 the Rangers again closed the gap to one on two straight kills by Shreffler trailing 21-20, however Southwestern stopped the run and went back up 23-20. The Bulldogs closed out the set win at 25-21 to complete the sweep over the Rangers 3-0. 

This was the final game for the Rangers this season finishing the season at 10-17 on the season with a 6-10 conference record.
