ALVA, OKLAHOMA - Northwestern Oklahoma State Lady Rangers continued their hot start to the season with a 91-70 victory over Oklahoma Baptist Saturday afternoon. Northwestern used a dominant second quarter out scoring the Bison 20-5 in the quarter before closing out the 91-70 victory.
Northwestern continues their best start since 2001-2002 season now improving to 8-0 on the season, and a 2-0 conference record. Oklahoma Baptist drops to 3-5 on the year with an 0-2 conference mark.
In the win Northwestern was led by Carly Crraig and Faith Simpson each going over twenty points as Craig knocked down seven three pointers for 25 points in the afternoon. Simpson finished with 24 points and seven rebounds. Camille Thomas and Talayah Thomas each reach double figures with 17 and 10 points.
In the opening quarter Paige Scott got things started in this one with a layup off a steal by Carly Craig as the Lady Rangers were up 2-0. Carly Craig knocked down her first three of the game putting Northwestern back in front 5-2. After a Bison basket, Northwestern answered with a 10-0 run to take their first double digit lead of the game. The run was combined by Simpson and Camille Thomas for all 10 points as Thomas hit three shots as the Lady Rangers led 15-4.The two teams battled trading three pointers as Craig drilled two more for nine first quarter points and the Lady Rangers holding a 21-10 lead.
The Bison though from there closed the quarter on a run after Northwestern held a 26-15 lead, two Northwestern turnovers helped allow seven straight to end the first quarter as Oklahoma Baptist cut the deficit to four as Northwestern led 26-22 through one quarter.Â
The second quarter Camille Thomas ended the Bison run as the Lady Rangers went back up six before Paige Scott answered a three pointer from the visitors. Oklahoma Baptist finished a jump shot in the paint to cut the Lady Ranger lead to 35-27 before Northwestern went on a big run to finish the second quarter.Â
With 6:00 minutes remaining in the first half Faith Simpson finished a layup pushing the Lady Ranger lead back to double digits. Craig then scored seven straight for the Lady Rangers while Northwestern forced two turnovers and held the Bison 0-3 shooting taking a 44-27 lead. Nikya Orange scored two giving the Lady Rangers a 46-27 lead.Â
Northwestern went on a 13-0 run to close out the second quarter after holding the Bison scoreless in the final six minutes of game action and took a 46-27 lead into halftime.Â
As Oklahoma Baptist looked to climb back into the Saturday matchup the Bison opened the third quarter on a 5-0 run before Simpson silenced their chance with four straight points. Talayah Thomas followed with her second three pointer of the game as Northwestern pushed their lead back to 18 with 5:50 left in the 3rd quarter. In the 3rd quarter the Lady Rangers would get the lead to 19 at 57-38 following Simpson's layup but the Bison answered with a 9-1 run as the lead went down to 11 with 2:50 left in the third quarter.Â
Talayah Thomas answered though with a three point play completing the layup and a foul shot. After a Craig three pointer pushed the lead to 13 Oklahoma Baptist was able to make a shot in the closing seconds as Northwestern led by 11 heading to the fourth quarter.Â
To open the fourth quarter the Lady Ranger defense forced a turnover early on with a steal from Craig as Simpson took advantage finishing the fast break with a bucket. Craig continued to keep the Bison in the distance with her seventh three pointer of the afternoon pushing the lead back to 76-58.
The lead was pushed to 20 for the first time following a three pointer by Talayah Thomas as Northwestern led 88-67 before a three pointer from Summya Adigun pushed it to the largest lead at 24 points before Oklahoma Baptist answered with one as Northwestern closed out the 91-70 victory over the Bison.
The Lady Rangers will be on the road next in Bethany, Oklahoma for a conference game against the Crimson Storm on Saturday December 9th with tip-off set for 1:00 PM.Â
