ALVA, OKLAHOMA - Northwestern closed out their four game series with Northwest Missouri St on Sunday afternoon. The Rangers jumped out early to a 5-0 lead following a three run fourth inning. Northwestern never looked back, controlling the game from there.
The win improves the Rangers to 5-3 on the season with five straight victories this week as the team gets set for their first conference game on Friday.
Garrett DeHaas got the start for the second time this season throwing 5.1 innings of work allowing just two runs in the win over the Bearcats. Justin Dunlap and Matthew Potts closed out the win, throwing the final 3.2 innings allowing zero runs. This was Garrett's first win of the season.
Brandon Holdren led the team with three hits on Sunday scoring one run in the win. The Rangers had four players with 2-RBI's in Gavin Mendoza, Hagen Barcello, Trevo Saire, and Thomas Beiswanger.
DeHaas threw a scoreless first inning after striking out a batter and Hayden Priest throwing out a Bearcat trying to steal. Rangers went down quietly in the first before they jumped on the board in the second inning.
Northwestern started the scoring with two doubles in the inning as Holdren doubled to left field before Jon Shaffer did the same, scoring the game's first run. A scoreless third inning led to the Rangers extending the lead in the third inning after Beiswanger stole second Barcello singled him in for a 2-0 lead.
The Rangers again wasted no time extending the lead, scoring for the third straight inning as Saire and Priest hit back to back doubles to take a 3-0 lead before a Beiswanger home run pushed it to 5-0.
DeHaas threw his fifth straight scoreless inning in the game this time working around a one out double after a defensive double play. A pop up to second base as Beiswanger made the catch, throwing out the runner at second.
The Bearcats struck in the sixth with two runs cutting the deficit to 5-2 in the top of the inning but the Rangers answered back with three runs to extend the lead. With a runner on second following Kelly stealing second a two run RBI double by Gavin Mendoza pushed the lead to 7-2. Barcello then singled in pinch runner Bradey Bejarano for an 8-2 lead.
After a 1-2-3 top of the inning Northwestern extended the lead once more as Jon Shaffer led off with an RBI double before being hit in on a Trevor Saire two-run home run taking a 10-2 lead which would be the final score in Sunday's game.
This is the fifth straight win for the Rangers as Northwestern completes the four game sweep over the Bearcats.
