Ranger's Hit Six Home Runs in Win over the Hornets

ALVA, OKLAHOMA - Northwestern Oklahoma State closed out a 6-3 victory over Emporia State Tuesday afternoon behind six solo home runs including two from Harley Shaffer. Rangers hit three in the third inning to take a 4-1 lead which Northwestern held the rest of the game.

The Rangers now imrpove to 6-0 at home this season and 7-5 overall on the year with a 1-2 record in conference play.

Brandon Holdren and Harley Shaffer led the Rangers with two hits. H. Shaffer led the team with 2-RBI's followed by five others tied with one.

Will Kates started the game throwing three innings while striking out three. He was relieved by Drew Price who picked up his first win of the season before Max McClain, Matthew Potts threw two innings. Cade Phelps closed out the win earning his first save of the season. 

After a scoreless top of the first inning by Will Kates after working around two singles before forcing a double play hit to second base. Harley Shaffer started things off for the Rangers taking the first pitch he saw to left field for a solo home run. The Rangers led 1-0 at the end of the first inning. 

The Hornets answered back in their half of a single with a solo home run by Hutchison to start the second inning. Following a single Kates used two strikeouts to escape further damage and hold the game at 1-1. 

Northwestern answered back in the third inning scoring three runs in the bottom half as three separate solo home runs pushed the Rangers back in front. Theron Perkins hit a one out solo home run to left field for the Rangers second of the game. Two batters later Northwestern bats stayed alive with a solo home run from Hagen Barcello, before him and Holdren would go back-to-back. Brandon Holdren's home run was the fourth of the game and third of the inning for the Rangers. 

Price came in for Kates, throwing a scoreless fourth inning striking out two batters along with Trevor Stiles throwing out Pena trying to steal. Emporia State got one run back in the fourth inning after a leadoff single and a walk. Rantz came around to score on a fielder's choice to cut their deficit to two. 

Northwestern had their fifth run come around to score in the sixth inning following a solo home run by Brayden Koenig to push the Ranger lead back to three at 5-2 through six innings. 

After a scoreless sixth inning Rangers pitching from McClain H. Shaffer extended the lead to 6-2 on his second solo home run of the afternoon and the team's sixth. 

The Hornets got one run back in the eighth inning on an RBI from Geekie, however that is all the Rangers would allow as Cade Phelps threw a scoreless ninth inning retiring the side to order including a final strikeout to end the game. 

Northwestern will return to conference play on Saturday afternoon with a doubleheader starting at 1:00 PM against Henderson State before closing out the series Sunday at 1:00 PM.
