ALVA, OKLAHOMA - Northwestern Oklahoma State Softball had their first two home games of the season against Newman University. The Jets won both games over the Rangers Tuesday winning the first one in extra innings 10-9 and the second by a final 3-0.
Northwestern falls to 1-4 overall this season and 0-0 in conference play.Â
GAME ONE:
The Jets were able to jump out early in the opening game of the afternoon with three runs in the first. Ramos drove in the first run on an RBI single before a double by Navarro pushed the Jets lead to 3-0. After a quiet first inning from the Rangers Newman jumped on with three more runs in the second. With two runners on base Waggoner singled to left field for an RBI single pushing the led to 4-0. Canez followed with the third straight single for a 5-0 lead. Their final run came from a Gutierrez single.
Pack opening the hitting for the Rangers with a one out single to left field. Oakley pushed the run across by reaching on an error allowing Pack to score the first Ranger run making the score 6-1. After Ireland Caro kept the Jets scoreless in the top of the third inning the Rangers answered back, continuing to find their way back in the game. Macy Spearman led off with a single to right field before a Tatum Winter double drove in Spearman. The inning was not done after DeTar stole second, setting up second and third for Pack to drive in two runs on a single and cut the deficit to 6-4.
The game remained 6-4 until the bottom of the fifth inning before a Hannah Howell solo home run brought the Rangers within one run at 6-5.Â
Newman jumped back with one run in the sixth inning to extend their lead to 7-5 following an error scoring an unearned run. The Rangers were ready to tie the game as with runners on first and second a Howell single scored pinch runner Ashley Low as the Rangers were back within one run. Jaci Oakley later scored Winters to tie the game at 7-7 sending the ball game into extra innings.
Newman put a three spot on the board in the top of the 8th inning following a single and a hit batter before a throwing error scored two runs. Northwestern entered their half of the frame trailing 10-7.Â
The Rangers were able to have two runs cross the plate on a ground out and a single but Newman was able to escape without Northwestern tying the game as the Rangers fell in game one 10-9.Â
GAME TWO:
The second game of the doubleheader was a pitching duel between the two teams as Hannah Howell took the ball for the Rangers, throwing a complete game allowing three runs.Â
Newman looked to get things started early by pushing runners on first and second with one out on a single and a walk. Howell worked around the jam though striking out the final batter of the inning Ramos keeping the game at zero.
DeTar walked before moving to second on a wild pitch but Newman was able to escape keeping the game at 0-0 through two innings of play.Â
In the third inning both teams went down in order before the fourth inning Pack had the Rangers first hit but was unable to score as the game went 0-0 through four innings of play.Â
The Jets struck first in the top of the fifth inning after a leadoff single by Navarro she was hit in by Luca-Paape off a double to center field taking a 1-0 lead over the Rangers. Newman loaded the bases in the inning but Howell escaped any further damage holding the game at 1-0.Â
After the first two batters were retired in order, Navarro reached base safely before a Luca- Paape two-run home run to left field pushed the Jets lead to 3-0 over the Rangers.Â
Northwestern threatened to tie the game in the bottom of the inning with two outs DeTar kept the inning alive with a walk, before an Oakley single brought the tying run to the plate. Dewitt was able to escape with no damage done as the Rangers fell 3-0 to Newman.Â
Northwestern will be back in action traveling to Midwestern State University's weekend tournament starting with a Saturday game for the Rangers.
